US Senator urges Valve to moderate hateful content on Steam

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds on Steam, I can’t help but feel a tad concerned about the recent revelations of hateful content lurking within this cherished gaming platform. The fact that such disturbing material is rampant, with over 1.8 million instances identified by the Anti-Defamatic League, is alarming.

On a Friday, Virginia Senator Mark R. Warner wrote an open appeal to Valve CEO Gabe Newell, asking him and his team to take action in reducing hateful content on Steam. In the letter, he referred to Steam as an environment that could be potentially harmful for teenagers and young adults when it comes to buying and playing online games due to its current state.

On his website, Warner posted a letter he’d written to Gabe Newell. In this letter, he referenced an investigative report from the Anti-Defamation League which uncovered approximately 1.8 million instances of extremist or offensive content on Steam. This encompasses racist, antisemitic, and sexist remarks that were posted utilizing Steam’s social functions. Warner then proceeded to highlight certain lines from Steam’s online behavior policy, encouraging the company to implement these rules and align their moderation practices with those of other industry leaders.
