Following an unwilling recruitment at the Urban Legend Debunking Department, college student Azami Fukurai must master her unique talents to unravel the mysterious events plaguing her city. Her mentor in this endeavor is the enigmatic and peculiar director Meguriya, while Jasmine serves as their easygoing driver. This motley crew of investigators work together to unearth the source of the ghosts and ghouls haunting their city. Guided by her teammates, Azami delves into seemingly ordinary settings filled with eerie intrigue, questioning an array of peculiar individuals to uncover the truth.

The gameplay might appear straightforward, but its compelling narrative more than compensates for it. Solving mysteries is enjoyable, primarily because of Azami’s reactions to each revelation. Each character in the story is exceptionally well-developed, and watching them react to unexplainable events is a frequent source of delight that intensifies as each case reaches its climax. The cases are structured like standalone episodes, each with an introduction and conclusion that eventually connect to the larger mystery theme, ‘The Great Reset’. From the first case to the last, recurring motifs are established, which can make the game feel predictable but had me on the edge of my seat when I realized the game was hinting at something. I must reiterate that I should be vague about this because it’s a gem and I don’t want to spoil the excitement of its best moments for anyone reading this review. Trust me, this game is more intelligent than it initially lets on.

I’d be happy to discuss the impressive art direction in Urban Myth Dissolution Center. The characters are expressive, and the muted blue backdrop contrasts strikingly with the bold red elements and points of interest. The user interface is enjoyable to navigate, and each background is intricately detailed, setting the tone for every scene. There’s a soothing quality to the blue hues that makes ordinary places feel eerie. It serves as a reminder that these convenient truths often come at the expense of innocent victims, who are often overlooked until we actively seek them out. Unfortunately, there’s no Urban Myth Debunking Center available for this purpose.

The game developer, Urban Myth Dissolution Center, will make their title available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC on February 13, 2025. In the meantime, a pre-release code for the PC version has been given out by the publisher.
