Netflix’s latest documentary titled “Untold: Shooting Guards” unveils the interconnected journeys of basketball players Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton. This captivating project delves into how these budding NBA stars’ destinies became entwined due to a prank in a locker room. Following the gun incident in the locker room, Crittenton experienced severe consequences as a series of events unfolded that ultimately disrupted his career. As fate would have it, Arenas too encountered more significant legal issues subsequently. Convicted of manslaughter in 2015, he was sentenced to 23 years behind bars. In the courtroom, Crittenton expressed remorse for his actions and admitted to making a “mistake.
Here, we take a look at what exactly happened and where Javaris Crittenton is now.
What happened to Javaris Crittenton from Netflix’s Untold: Shooting Guards
As a passionate fan, I found myself thrilled when Javaris Crittenton was selected as the 19th pick by the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2007 NBA draft. With high hopes, I watched as he donned the purple and gold. However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008, followed by a move to the Washington Wizards shortly thereafter.
During his time with the Wizards, the professional basketball player had a disagreement with teammate Gilbert Arenas, which escalated into a confrontation in the locker room. This altercation, as reported, occurred on Christmas Eve and centered around a dispute about an unpaid gambling debt. The incident involved both players brandishing firearms.
During a heated dispute, guns were used, prompting an investigation and the temporary suspension of both parties involved. Later, Arenas returned to the Washington Wizards. In September 2010, Crittenton signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Charlotte Bobcats team. Regrettably, his NBA career was short-lived, lasting only a year. In 2011, Crittenton was arrested on manslaughter charges for accidentally killing Julian Jones when he tried to shoot someone who allegedly robbed him.
Where is Javaris Crittenton now?
In 2015, Javaris Crittenton admitted guilt for involuntary manslaughter, resulting in a 23-year prison sentence. After serving a decade, the ex-Los Angeles Lakers player was released in April 2023. Even though he’s out of jail now, Crittenton remains subject to rigorous probation terms and community service requirements.
According to the latest updates, Crittenton is now abiding by stringent probation conditions that are expected to last for five years. At 37 years old, he is required to wear a monitoring device and observe a strict curfew from 7 p.m. till 7 a.m. Furthermore, his probation term includes a requirement to complete a significant amount of community service hours – approximately 7,200 within the first ten years of his probation (as reported by People).
Occasionally, you can find Crittenton active on Instagram. On January 1, 2025, the ex-shooting guard shared a heartfelt message on social media expressing his gratitude. He wrote, “At age 37, I’m thankful to God for His forgiveness, mercy, and allowing me to continue living on this earth as a free man. I’m grateful to God for His protection and the strength He has given me to get this far.
