Until Dawn Reviews Blast Movie, Gets Poor Rotten Tomatoes Score

The reviews for the movie “Until Dawn” have started to appear since its release in the cinemas. While the game’s concept has an interesting spin, the reception towards the film itself is divided.

What are Until Dawn reviews saying?

On Rotten Tomatoes, the game Until Dawn has launched with a 59% approval rating based on 44 critic reviews at this moment. However, the audience score for the game is still being calculated.

Critics generally find that Until Dawn heavily relies on familiar horror cliches, with Inverse’s Lyvie Scott commenting that the film “prioritizes cheap thrills over a coherent plot” and uses this as a means to cram as many teen horror stereotypes into its two-hour runtime as possible.

Polygon‘s Austen Goslin offers a more blunt perspective, stating that the film doesn’t falter due to lack of fidelity to the game. Instead, he argues that it falls short because it’s dull, a state that the game had never reached.

Although many critics found issues with the movie, not all of them disliked it outright. The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee, for instance, described it as “passable” for a lower-stakes film. While it may not have been particularly scary, he noted that it was competently made and boosted by a talented ensemble of young actors.

In the ensemble of Until Dawn, you’ll find actors such as Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare.

The screenplay is penned by Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman. Sandberg and Dauberman are among the film’s producers alongside Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Lotta Losten, Roy Lee, and Mia Maniscalco. Charles Miller and Hermen Hulst hold the positions of executive producers.

One year following her sister Melanie’s mysterious vanishing, Clover along with her companions venture into a secluded valley where she disappeared, seeking answers. As they explore an abandoned visitor center, they are pursued by a masked assassin and meet gruesome deaths one after the other…yet, they miraculously find themselves waking up again at the start of the very same night. The group is now confined within the valley, compelled to endure this horrifying ordeal repeatedly — with each cycle, the danger escalates, becoming more terrifying than before. As their hope fades, they soon discover that they possess a finite number of lives and the only means of escape is by surviving until dawn.

Until Dawn is out now in theaters.
