As a thrilled fan, I can’t help but share my excitement over the latest announcement by Supermassive! During this summer’s Game Fest, they unveiled their chilling new horror game. Drawing from playtests and intel directly from Supermassive Games, here’s what we’re eagerly anticipating about the upcoming terror-filled adventure.

Space Horror From Fear Specialists
Directive 8020 will be the next installment in “The Dark Pictures Anthology,” a popular horror game series by Supermassive Games, set to release on October 2, 2025. This studio gained significant recognition in 2015 with Until Dawn; it garnered a 96% recommendation rate from players and quickly became an iconic PlayStation title. In this game, you’ll find yourself guiding eight teenagers as they struggle to survive on Blackwood Mountain.
Directive 8020, unveiled at Summer Game Fest, promises a unique experience: Supermassive will whisk us away on a spaceship and keep us awake with fear reminiscent of “The Thing”. It’s clear that significant work has been invested in fashioning the frightening creatures. According to SMG, they devoted numerous years to fine-tuning the design to achieve perfection.
“The Thing” – And You’re Facing It
As a gamer, I find myself stranded alongside my comrades on an alien planet, 12 light years distant from home, after our ship crashes. Not only do we battle the inhospitable terrain of this foreign world, but also an unseen menace lurking among us – aliens who can mimic human forms and speech flawlessly, hiding within our very crew. Who among us is friend or foe? This game promises a gripping narrative, but it’s the unexpected twists in gameplay that make it truly captivating. Drawing inspiration from classics like Alien and Event Horizon, there’s much more to discover beneath the surface.

Game Session Instead Of Movie Night
The game, much like Supermassive Games’ previous works, will present choices that significantly impact your journey. As per Dan McDonald, this game comprises eight episodes, approximately an hour each, totaling around 8 hours of engaging content. However, the game offers more than just a mere 8-hour adventure.
The unique aspect is that decisions made at the game’s outset can have far-reaching consequences later on. Given your survival hinges upon these choices, it’s crucial to make them wisely. Thankfully, you don’t need to restart the entire game for a different experience; merely revisiting a moment and selecting another option can lead to a unique experience.
Supermassive Games encourages players to gather with friends in the evening for a shared space horror experience rather than simply watching a movie. To enhance this cooperative play, there’s a multiplayer mode that allows up to 4 friends to join and play together.
With Directive 8020, a novel feature called Turning Point is now being introduced. This marks the initial opportunity to alter choices within the Dark Pictures series for the very first time.

Inspiration From Everything
During the Summer Game Fest, it was mentioned that the game draws partial inspiration from the Apollo 10 mission, which served primarily as a rehearsal for the moon landing in Apollo 11. Since Apollo 10 wasn’t intended to land on the moon, it was only equipped with enough fuel for orbiting. Similarly, in the game, your spacecraft, Cassiopeia, wasn’t designed for you to land on the alien planet.
Additionally, there’s a NASA directive, 8020.7G, that focuses on controlling biological contamination for both incoming and outgoing planetary spacecraft. This suggests that many games, movies, and real-life events have influenced the creation of this game to deliver a chilling, high-quality horror experience.
Does the upcoming game from the creators of Until Dawn spark your enthusiasm, or do games with a similar level of horror tend to be too frightening for your taste?
