Supermassive Games, known for creating chilling narrative video games like Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, has abandoned its work on a Blade Runner title that was in progress.
The sci-fi narrative adventure, intended for release on the upcoming PlayStation 6 and Xbox consoles, was canceled before many enthusiasts had even learned about it.
Until Dawn devs scrap Blade Runner game
According to Inside Gaming’s report, the studio was developing a solo story-driven game scheduled for release in 2027. The game’s captivating campaign, estimated to last between 10 and 12 hours, would have been set in the city of New Zurich in the year 2065, with players taking on the role as the lone Blade Runner.
Titled “Blade Runner: Time to Live”, this upcoming game aims to be an immersive, story-driven action-adventure. It endeavors to blend the profound philosophical aspects of Blade Runner with exhilarating action-adventure gameplay.
Back in September of last year, I kicked off the preliminary stages for a new game project. The initial plan was to start developing prototypes this month. But unfortunately, it looks like the people holding the intellectual property rights for this game, Alcon Entertainment, have decided to shelve the project. They’re known to be quite protective when it comes to this franchise.
The synopsis for this game describes a transition from the bustling subterranean cityscape of New Zurich 2065 to the haunting ruins of a bygone era. In this narrative, you are instructed to retire Rev, a secretive and merciless mastermind behind an underground replicant syndicate. However, you are deceived and abandoned in a treacherous landscape.
The game’s synopsis takes us from the crowded undercity of New Zurich 2065 to the haunting vestiges of a world long forgotten. In this tale, you are commanded to retire Rev, the enigmatic and relentless head of an underground replicant organization. But things go awry, as you’re betrayed and left for dead in a ruthless environment.
The production cost of Blade Runner: Time to Live was quite high for the studio, with initial development costs estimated at over $45 million and another $9 million set aside for casting well-known actors, possibly from the B-list.
Although the title may not proceed as planned, the studio continues to develop other games within their narrative adventure genre. In the meantime, the studio is working on Directive 8020, a fresh sci-fi horror story, featuring Lashana Lynch from No Time To Die.
