Ever wondered how Jharrel Jerome managed to breathe life into Anthony Robles’ inspiring tale in the movie ‘Unstoppable’? The film’s one-legged scenes, portraying Robles’ incredible wrestling champion journey, have left viewers spellbound due to their remarkable authenticity. This was achieved by blending cutting-edge visual effects with Robles himself playing an active role behind the scenes.
As an ardent admirer, I’m excited to delve into the fascinating journey of how Jerome metamorphosed into the iconic figure, the One-Legged Titan. I’m intrigued by the techniques that powered those unstoppable one-leg scenes and the remarkable collaboration that brought this powerful portrayal to life.
How Jharrel Jerome and Anthony Robles filmed Unstoppable’s one-legged scenes
In the movie “Unstoppable,” actor Jharrel Jerome took on the role of Anthony Robles, an amputee who won the NCAA Division I wrestling championship.
The movie employed sophisticated visual techniques and the active involvement of Robles, portraying the authentic physique of the athlete with precision. In scenes where Jerome’s right leg was absent in reality, computer-generated imagery (CGI) was used extensively to create the illusion.
William Goldenberg, the director, described the method they used, saying, “Both Anthony and Jharrel performed all the wrestling scenes. In post-production, we chose which ones looked best. For scenes where it appears to be Anthony wrestling, we digitally placed Jharrel’s face onto Anthony’s body. Conversely, for scenes where it seems like Jharrel is wrestling, we used CGI to remove Jharrel’s leg from the visuals.” Goldenberg highlighted the flawless integration of these effects, praising the visual effects team for their detailed work.
In addition to participating in certain wrestling scenes, Anthony Robles’ image had Jerome’s face superimposed onto it. Goldenberg emphasized Robles’ exceptional athletic prowess, remarking, “There’s no one else who can move quite like him. He’s an extraordinary athlete, and because he’s missing a leg, there are things he can do that someone with two legs could never accomplish.” Robles’ participation was crucial in maintaining realism.
According to Goldenberg, “Robles was indispensable in our success; he played such a crucial role in its production. In fact, he’s credited as an actor in the film” (as reported by The Direct). To match Robles’ athletic style, Jerome honed his own movements during training, resulting in a harmonious performance.
Working together, Jerome, Robles, and their visual effects squad breathed life into Unstoppable, guaranteeing that Robles’ tale was portrayed authentically and with technical credibility. The film made its debut on Amazon Prime Video on January 15, 2025.
