Unni Mukundan’s Marco faces setback as CBFC seeks OTT ban, blocks TV release over violent content

Unni Mukundan significantly transformed the Malayalam film industry with his movie Marco, which received an ‘A’ rating and is known for its intense violence. After a triumphant theater release, this action-packed film was also made available on streaming platforms. Recently, though, the CBFC has called for tough actions against this film.

Caught off guard, I find myself appealing directly to the chairperson of our committee, urging for intervention from higher authorities in the central government, aiming to halt the streaming of Marco’s content on OTT platforms.

For those unfamiliar, the CBFC (Censor Board of Film Certification) has declined the television broadcasting rights for the movie “Marco”. This decision was made because the film’s very graphic violence content is deemed unsuitable for TV screenings.

In an interview with Manorama News, Nadeem Thufali, Regional Officer of CBFC, stated that the film “Marco” has been given an A certificate by the CBFC. He advises parents to exercise caution when permitting children to watch such films. The CBFC only handles certification and does not engage in censorship. Additionally, the satellite rights for the movie “Marco” have been denied as it is deemed unsuitable for family viewing.

Meanwhile, Unni Mukundan, speaking with Galatta Plus previously, stood up for the film Marco, addressing intense backlash regarding its graphic portrayal of violence.

It’s often claimed that violent depictions aren’t typically found in Malayalam cinema, as this genre is generally perceived as peaceful and steeped in tradition.

In response, Unni Mukundan argued that violence has long been intertwined with human development and societal structures. Moreover, he emphasized that the depictions of violence in his movie barely scratch the surface when compared to the actual occurrences in real life.

He stated, “Throughout human history, conflict has played a role in our development. Wars have led us to achieve peace. Fundamentally, survival is our primary objective. I’m not advocating for displaying violence on screens, but it’s important to acknowledge that violence is prevalent in our society. Marco only portrays about ten percent of the violence present in our world.

For the unversed, Marco has been streaming on the OTT platform SonyLIV post its theatrical run.
