Universal Studios has decided to reschedule the release dates for some upcoming films from Dreamworks Animation and Illumination. Specifically, Shrek 5, with the comeback of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, will now be released on December 23rd, 2026 instead of its original date in July 1st, 2026. Walt Dohrn, Conrad Vernon, and Bard Ableson are taking charge as co-directors for this new movie.
Beginning in the vacancy of July 1st, 2026 is where you’ll find “Minions 3”. The movie was originally scheduled for June 30th, 2027 but has been moved ahead a full year. Pierre Coffin, who directed the initial three “Despicable Me” movies and the first “Minions” spinoff, will once again take the director’s chair for this new film. Coffin is also responsible for lending his voice to the Minions. Furthermore, Universal Pictures hasn’t abandoned the 2027 slot, instead opting to reserve it for a currently untitled summer release film that was initially scheduled for March 19th of the same year.
The planned release of Shrek 5 in late December will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the franchise’s initial debut, which took place in 2001.
