As a die-hard Outlander fan with countless hours invested in this captivating saga, I must say that Season 7, Episode 2 has left me reeling. The parting of Claire and her family is never easy, but this goodbye feels particularly poignant. For those wondering about the feasibility of time travel as a means of frequent reunions, let me assure you, dear reader, that in Outlander’s world, it’s not quite as simple as flipping a switch.
In the second episode of Outlander‘s seventh season, Claire and Jamie bid farewell to Bree, Roger, Jemmy, and Mandy. Though they’ve had to part ways before, this separation seems particularly significant. For those unfamiliar with the books, they might be puzzled as to why this goodbye appears so permanent.
It seems that Claire and Bree can’t simply use the stones for travel at their convenience, and Jemmy can’t just pop back to visit everyone. Claire strongly suggests that it is a permanent goodbye, as she believes she will never see her daughter or grandchildren again. But is this truly the situation?
Time travel is a dangerous thing in Outlander
As a gamer diving deep into these narratives, I can confidently say that the books offer a crystal-clear perspective on time travel conundrums compared to the series. This clarity stems from the intriguing insight we gain into the thoughts and mental processes of those who traverse time. Although the series has already successfully conveyed the potential dangers of time travel, the books take it a step further by delving deeper into these risks.
It’s clear that Otter Tooth and Wendigo journeyed together since the 1960s. Yet, they eventually found themselves in separate time eras on their own.
In the fifth season of “Outlander”, Roger secures a rope around himself, Bree, and Jemmy before they pass through the stones. He explains this will ensure they stay connected during their journey, but we observe the rope is severed where they emerge from the stones. Subsequently, they travel without that rope in the next instance, hinting that Roger understands the rope’s limitations in maintaining their unity effectively.
It’s evident that time travel carries risks and uncertainties. On their initial attempt, the trio found themselves back at the same location. They journeyed to places of emotional significance. On another occasion, they had to navigate their way back to their own time in order to save Mandy from peril.
Nobody would just travel back and forth in Outlander
In the TV show, it’s evident that traveling isn’t something that can be done spontaneously due to its complexities. Claire prepared ahead with her Bat Dress during season three, while Bree didn’t plan as meticulously but still made some preparations. Roger also did the same. Given the risks associated with time travel, not everyone who has traveled accidentally in the past has survived.
Claire and her companions don’t engage in aimless to-ing and fro-ing. They move between places only when they deem it necessary or when circumstances require it.
Claire had bid farewell, as she sincerely believed she would not cross paths with Bree, Roger, Jemmy, or Mandy ever again.
