As a lifelong cinephile who’s seen it all, from black-and-white classics to the latest blockbusters, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement when I hear about Richard Eyre’s upcoming romantic drama, “The Housekeeper.” With an illustrious cast that includes Uma Thurman, Anthony Hopkins, and Phoebe Dynevor, this adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel Rebecca promises to be a cinematic masterpiece.
In a new development, Richard Eyre has chosen Uma Thurman and Anthony Hopkins to take leading roles in his upcoming film, a romantic drama titled “The Governess“, which draws inspiration from Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel “Rebecca”.
In this project, the director known for “Iris” and “Notes on a Scandal” will follow a screenplay penned by author Rose Tremain. Julia Taylor-Stanley and Kevin Loader are set to produce, with the storyline inspired by one of Tremain’s short stories and an upcoming novel.
Who else is in The Housekeeper cast?
Actress Phoebe Dynevor, known for her roles in “Fair Play” and “Bridgerton,” is set to join Thurman and Hopkins in the cast of “The Housekeeper.” According to Variety, the plot centers around Thurman’s character Danni, a housekeeper at Manderville Hall, a historic estate owned by Lord DeWithers (played by Hopkins). An unexpected love affair unfolds for Danni when she encounters a young and attractive novelist, Daphne Du Maurier, portrayed by Dynevor.
In a statement released via Variety, Rose Tremain’s narrative delves into themes of love, fear, fiction, yearning, aspiration, mortality, and inheritance – a grand exploration. Simultaneously, it offers the intricacy of profoundly complex characters and unforeseen changes in audience empathy. We, as cast members, find ourselves cradling a tale as dense and tumultuous as the environment it embodies, with Manderville Hall concealing secrets and emotional depth beneath its ancient walls, according to Eyre’s statement.
Thurman has made a name for herself by portraying various unforgettable characters, such as the vengeful ex-assassin in both Kill Bill films, the graceful wife of a gangster in Pulp Fiction, the wicked Poison Ivy in Batman & Robin (1997), and Fantine in Les Misérables (1998).
Among Thurman’s most notable roles are those in films such as Dangerous Liaisons, The Amazing Misadventures of the Baron Munchausen, Gattaca, Tape, and Stargirl from Hollywood.
Known as a distinguished and honored performer, Hopkins has garnered fame primarily through his leading parts in films such as The Elephant Man, The Silence of the Lambs, The Remains of the Day, Titus, The Two Popes, and The Father (and more besides).
Conversely, Dynevor has been making waves in the acting world, appearing in productions such as The Colour Room, Bank of Dave, Prisoners’ Wives, The Village, Snatch, and Younger.
