Ullozhukku actress Urvashi about her sister Kalpana: ‘Should have been alive today, I often wish’

Veteran actor Urvashi has a well-known presence in the Malayalam film industry. She is the esteemed sister of the iconic star Kalpana, who sadly passed away in 2016. Although Urvashi typically prefers solitude, she recently opened up about her late sibling in an interview with SCREEN. In this conversation, she reminisced on the fact that Kalpana didn’t receive the acclaim she truly deserved.

Urvashi feels confident that Kalpana possesses the talent to move beyond traditional roles, and would flourish if given the opportunity to collaborate with today’s innovative directors. The actress further noted that contemporary filmmakers are more open to taking artistic risks and providing artists the freedom to fully develop their abilities.

She pointed to actor Indrans as an illustration, suggesting that without today’s directors, his full potential might have gone unnoticed. In her opinion, it was only through the chances given by modern filmmakers that his profound knowledge of costumes, distinctive thought process, and passion for literature became apparent.

According to her statement, “I frequently find myself wishing Kalpana were alive today. This sentiment persists. Modern filmmakers possess a remarkable ability to foresee and execute innovative ideas. I’m not implying that past directors were inferior or that current ones are superior. Rather, it’s the boldness with which contemporary directors tackle creative risks that I admire.

Urvashi continued to ponder over Kalpana’s last act in the 2015 film titled Charlie, which was helmed by Martin Prakkat. The movie showcased Dulquer Salmaan and Parvathy Thiruvothu as its primary characters. She believed that this role demonstrated her sister’s versatility and skill.

As Urvashi suggests, Kalpana possesses the talent to portray various significant roles, should the chance arise. In fact, she felt strongly that a movie such as “Ullozhukku” might have been an ideal match for her sibling.

On January 25, 2016, Kalpana Ranjani, aged 51, tragically lost her life following a heart attack in the city of Hyderabad.
