As a dedicated gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the post-apocalyptic world of The Division, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the recent developments surrounding The Division 3. Having been an avid player since its launch in 2016, I have witnessed firsthand the franchise’s meteoric rise and unfortunate decline.
In those halcyon days of 2018, I remember eagerly awaiting expansions, spin-offs, and even a movie adaptation that promised to take the experience to new heights. Alas, those dreams have been shattered like the remnants of a collapsed Dark Zone building.
Now, as Ubisoft focuses on Hollywood IPs and fails to deliver on their promises, The Division feels like an orphaned child in a toy store filled with flashier, more popular toys. With each passing day, my hopes for The Division 3 grow dimmer, and I can’t help but wonder if it will ever see the light of day.
But I remain hopeful, clinging to the faint glimmers of promise. A dedicated page on Massive Entertainment’s website and job postings for new developers suggest that something is brewing beneath the surface. Perhaps one day, we’ll return to the streets of a dystopian New York City or Chicago, fighting for survival and uncovering conspiracy theories in The Division 3.
Until then, I’ll keep my fingers crossed and continue to dream about the days when Ubisoft recognized the unique value of The Division and allocated the resources needed to deliver a worthy successor. In the meantime, I guess I’ll just have to settle for replaying the original game on repeat—at least until the battery in my controller gives out!
Division 3, which Ubisoft’s team has been working on for several months, may unfortunately never be released to the public.
In 2020, the development of the sequel came to a standstill, partly because of the pandemic. However, Ubisoft has now addressed the concerns of The Division’s dedicated fanbase by officially announcing the release of the next game in 2023.
But why has a franchise that was celebrated until 2018 been so neglected by Ubisoft?
Management Missteps and Strategic Failures
The neglect of The Division can largely be attributed to strategic mismanagement at Ubisoft.
After the pandemic, Ubisoft started focusing more on creating games based on popular Hollywood movies. This change in direction saw them channel resources into projects like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars: Outlaws, with the intention of attracting a wider audience by tapping into well-known blockbuster movie franchises.
Hey there! As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but wonder if it would be amazing if the backdrop for The Division 3 is none other than the windy city itself – Chicago. What do you think? #TheDivision3

Frontiers of Pandora nor Star Wars: Outlaws met the mark. Both games received mediocre responses from critics, often due to complaints about their lack of innovation and substance. Many gamers expressed these concerns.
Due to focusing heavily on projects related to Hollywood, Ubisoft had to temporarily pause the development of one of its top-performing series, specifically The Division.
The group, renowned for dedicating endless hours to refining structures and delving into the tactical shooter’s distinctive PvE aspects, felt neglected.
The Decline of a Once-Promising Franchise
From 2016 to 2018, The Division shone as a rising star in the gaming industry.
Preparations had been made for expanding the storyline, creating standalone sequels, as well as a film adaption starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain.
As a dedicated gamer, it’s been a bummer to see Ubisoft shifting focus onto other projects, leaving the promising Free-to-Play expansion of The Division, which I had been eagerly anticipating (The Division: Heartlands), on the backburner. Additionally, the mobile spin-off of The Division, a game mode I was looking forward to playing on-the-go (The Division: Resurgence), seems to have taken a back seat for now.
Originally, I was eagerly waiting for the release of that movie, but due to the sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it got delayed. Now, playing The Division game, its fictional virus outbreak strangely mirrors our current reality.
The result? A franchise bursting with potential now seems frozen in time.
Hope for The Division 3
Although Ubisoft has hinted at The Division 3, the lack of substantial updates remains a concern.
With my years of experience in the gaming industry, I’ve learned to always pay attention to the subtle signs when a new opportunity arises. The dedicated page on Massive Entertainment’s website, featuring job postings for new developers, definitely piques my interest. It suggests that something exciting is brewing at this esteemed studio, and as someone who has been following their work, I can’t help but feel drawn to it. It’s not every day that a company of such caliber seeks fresh talent, so I’m eager to see what they have in store for the future.
Yet, it remains unclear when or if the game will actually advance, as there have been no trailers, announcements, or marketing materials released thus far.

The persistent financial difficulties faced by Ubisoft, worsened by subpar sales and tepid responses to their recently released games, cast a shadow over the gaming industry’s future prospects.
Supporters are hoping that Ubisoft acknowledges the distinct worth of The Division and dedicates the necessary resources to create a sequel that lives up to its reputation.
It’s currently unclear if we’ll see the release of Tom Clancy’s The Division 3, but the passion for this series among fans continues to thrive.
