Ubisoft will reportedly shut down XDefiant after Season 4 “if they can’t get enough players”

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen games come and go, some leaving lasting impacts while others fade into obscurity. XDefiant, for me, was a game that had potential but unfortunately didn’t quite hit the mark.

Currently, Ubisoft is facing some challenging times. The release of Star Wars Outlaws didn’t meet expectations, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been postponed, and the company’s stock price dropped to a ten-year low. Furthermore, if recent rumors are accurate, XDefiant might not be the solution they need.

If you haven’t given XDefiant a try, let me tell you it’s a fast-paced first-person shooter game released this year. Its aim was to carve out a space as a more skill-intensive option compared to Call of Duty. After playing it myself, I can confirm that it offered a good time, but unfortunately, it didn’t seem to resonate with a broad player base.

“XDefiant is already dead”

According to game developer and leaker Shaun Weber, posted on platform X, Ubisoft is planning to discontinue support for XDefiant following Season 4 if player numbers don’t pick up.

XDefiant is already dead. Ubisoft research team is actively asking their tester to have another In-House test session and give/repeat their feedback. Multiple sources told [me] that its possible that the game will end its support after season 4 if they cant get enough players.

As an ardent fan, I’m eagerly anticipating that Season 4 will reach its conclusion somewhere around the first half of 2025. That means we’ve got roughly six months or less to enjoy this fantastic journey together!

Regrettably, it appears that XDefiant may not see a significant turnaround. Based on their current plans, they seem more focused on delivering additional content similar to what they’ve already released, rather than introducing something entirely fresh and potentially attracting new players.

We of course wish all the best for the developers behind XDefiant, but frankly it was predictable that this kind of game was going to struggle. The arena-shooter genre has been on the decline for decades, and XDefiant wasn’t offering any real innovation.

Have you had an opportunity to play the game this year, and if you have, do you believe it has a lasting impact or prolongs its existence?
