As a long-time gamer with countless hours spent on various titles, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for those who find themselves embroiled in this legal battle against Ubisoft over The Crew. I myself was among the players who eagerly jumped into the open world of The Crew when it first launched, reveling in the freedom to roam and race across a digital recreation of the United States.
Ever since Ubisoft took down the servers for The Crew, leaving me and other fans unable to play, we’ve banded together to take legal action against them due to our frustration.
Although many players were willing to tolerate the demise of multiplayer, the primary issue lay in the fact that the game’s single-player mode became unplayable as well. This unfortunate circumstance sparked a lawsuit initiated by fans against the publisher, alleging they had failed to deliver an offline game option.
Matthew Cassel and Alan Liu, representing themselves and others in a similar position, initiated this class action lawsuit against Ubisoft. They allege that Ubisoft deceived consumers by selling them what appeared to be a full game purchase, when in reality they were merely purchasing a restricted license for accessing the game instead.
Physical discs never contained the game
It seems the primary issue lies in Ubisoft not adequately informing users about the possibility of shutting down the servers for The Crew game. Subsequently, when they did indeed close those servers, they neglected to offer an offline playing option.
Unlike some titles such as “Assassin’s Creed 3”, which remained playable without internet connection even after their servers were deactivated, it’s important to note that “The Crew” did not receive the same treatment and offline play was never implemented for this game.
Cassel and Liu insist on a jury trial, and together with other potential class members, their total claims exceed $5,000,000 without considering any interest or additional costs.
What are your thoughts on the case? Did you ever play The Crew when the servers were still online?
