As a long-time fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, I’ve always appreciated Ubisoft’s ability to transport us to different historical periods and cultures. However, I have to admit that I was taken aback by the revelation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and its depiction of Feudal Japan with a Black Samurai among its protagonists.
As a passionate gamer, I was excited about the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Shadows set in Feudal Japan earlier this year. However, my excitement was short-lived when I saw the controversy surrounding its portrayal of Japan’s history and the addition of Yasuke, a Black Samurai, as one of the game’s main characters. The backlash from a vocal portion of the gaming community was swift and intense.
As a history enthusiast and avid gamer, I have always appreciated Ubisoft’s commitment to creating immersive and historically rich experiences through their Assassin’s Creed series. However, as someone who values historical accuracy, I was relieved to read the recent letter published by Ubisoft to its Japanese community regarding the authenticity of their games.
The Assassin’s Creed Shadows team has a message for our Japanese community.

Ubisoft acknowledges the controversy surrounding Yasuke, a Samurai character of African descent in Shadows who shares the screen with another playable character, Naoe the Shinobi. According to Ubisoft, the historical accuracy of Yasuke being a Samurai is uncertain and open for debate. By introducing both Yasuke and Naoe, players will have the opportunity to explore different gameplay styles.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed that Ubisoft hasn’t given any signs of changing their decisions regarding Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, they’re open to hearing our thoughts and opinions in a respectful manner. Rest assured, Assassin’s Creed Shadows remains on schedule for its release on November 15, 2024.
