As a lifelong Austen enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, I can hardly contain my excitement over the news that Netflix is developing not one, but two adaptations of “Pride & Prejudice”.
In terms of transforming books into screenplays, Netflix is no novice at breathing life into beloved tales that capture our hearts. Some of the platform’s top-rated content draws inspiration from bestselling novels such as The Perfect Couple, Damsel, Uglies, and The Lincoln Lawyer. Rest assured, there are numerous other Netflix productions stemming from books, with even more on the horizon.
From the captivating romance novels by Emily Henry, a favorite among BookTok enthusiasts, to the edge-of-your-seat thrillers destined for your next binge-watching session on Netflix, your library and streaming queue will remain abundant. Notably, Netflix is currently working on two unique adaptations of ‘Pride & Prejudice’, each offering a fresh and exhilarating take on the story. One adaptation even includes a young adult twist.
Pride & Prejudice show and movie in works at Netflix
On October 11th, word spread that Netflix was planning a new TV series adapted from Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice.” Although the series hasn’t received final approval, it is known that Dolly Alderton will draft the scripts for this potential production. Since the show isn’t official as of now, no actors have been announced for the project; however, it’s expected to draw high-profile talents for the roles of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.
Should the series progress and secure an official green light, “Pride & Prejudice” will be the second Netflix original to bring Jane Austen’s work to life on screen. Earlier, they transformed her book “Persuasion” into a film featuring Dakota Johnson in 2022. Regrettably, this production received predominantly unfavorable reviews from critics; however, as the saying goes, “If at first you don’t succeed, try again.” And what better title to attempt than Austen’s most beloved work?
Apart from a traditional, movie version of “Pride & Prejudice”, Netflix is also working on a film adaptation of the contemporary reimagining novel “Pride” by Ibi Zoboi. This novel was published in 2018 and is set in Brooklyn, New York where an Afro-Latina teenager encounters challenges related to culture and family while developing feelings for her arrogant neighbor boy.
The book’s company Alloy Entertainment, along with President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground, will produce the upcoming film. Known for her work on “The Bear”, Karen Joseph Adcock is penning the screenplay. With such prominent figures involved, this in-development movie seems destined for approval and international acclaim.
In a developing stage, both projects are poised for release on Netflix, delighting Jane Austen enthusiasts with the prospect of two new adaptations of “Pride & Prejudice”. Here’s hoping that both the modern retelling film and the direct series adaptation will premiere swiftly. In anticipation, let us envision our dream castings for the leading roles: Who would be your ideal choices?
