Twitch VTuber "fallenshadow" Banned After Getting Drunk On Stream

As a long-time follower of VTubers, I must say that this recent turn of events surrounding fallenshadow (Shondo) has left me utterly bewildered and dismayed. The VTuber community is like a close-knit family, and seeing one of our own being treated unfairly by a seemingly arbitrary and inconsistent platform like Twitch is truly heart-wrenching.

The announcement that Twitch suspended VTuber fallenshadow (Shondo) for 30 days has sparked a lot of strong opinions from the VTuber community, focusing primarily on concerns about perceived bias and inconsistencies in the application of rules within the platform.

Update: According to StreamerBans, fallenshadow has been unbanned from Twitch after only one and a half days.

Reason for the Ban

Fallenshadow was temporarily suspended from streaming on Twitch due to intoxication, which the platform deemed as harmful behavior. This ban not only interrupts her income flow, but also requires her subscribers to resubscribe once her suspension is over.

Alongside her worries about the future, Shondo’s actions were classified as self-harm, as she later explained in a subsequent post.

“I’m afraid for the future because I always have the niggling thought that all of my friends will leave me or everyone will leave me or things will get worse because eventually my meds will stop working. That doesn’t mean I want to hurt myself in any way or plan on it.”

VTuber Community Response

Fellow virtual YouTubers have voiced concerns over what they perceive as an apparent bias in Twitch’s policies. Bao pointed out, “‘Popular gamers on Twitch can use offensive language like ‘k** yourself’, but mentioning mental health during a streaming session while drinking leads to a 30-day ban.’” Pipkin Pippa echoed this sentiment, saying, “It feels like there’s someone at Twitch who is specifically targeting you.’” Shondo also raised concerns about the unequal application of rules, and questioned the openness of Twitch’s policies: “Is it against the terms of service to drink on stream now? Or is there a secret set of rules, which my partner manager has admitted moderation enforces for me (that I’m not allowed to know about, by the way)?”

Twitch has not commented beyond the initial email, and the ban remains in place.
