As a long-time Twitch user and supporter of small streamers, I find myself dismayed by this latest price hike for mobile subscriptions. It feels like a continuous string of L’s from the platform that I once held dear.
On October 1, 2024, Twitch, the well-known streaming service owned by Amazon, is going to boost the cost for its Tier 1 subscriptions, and it’s specifically mobile users who will be impacted. The new price will be $7.99 in more than 40 countries for both iOS and Android apps, a considerable jump from the current $5.99 rate that was itself an increase from the earlier summer’s $4.99.
Beginning October 1st, we’re raising the prices for new Tier 1 subscription and gift subscriptions within our mobile app across more than 40 nations.
Feel free to ask your questions during Patch Notes today, August 21st at 12pm PT.
Streamers and subscribers in these countries will be informed via email.

Why Will The Change Only Effect Mobile?
The main cause behind this price increase is to balance out the costs we incur due to fees charged by Apple and Google for in-app transactions. These tech giants keep 30% of every payment processed via their platforms, so Twitch has had to revise its pricing approach.
This increase is specific to mobile users, meaning that those who subscribe via desktop browsers will not see any changes in their subscription costs. Additionally, Tier 2 and Tier 3 subscriptions remain unaffected by this change.
Twitch Community In Shambles
The announcement has been broadly criticized across Twitch’s user base, with many airing their dissatisfaction on social networking sites. They have been voicing their discontent towards the platform for persistently increasing its prices. Some users have highlighted that these repeated price increases negatively impact small streamers, as regular subscribers might choose to terminate their subscriptions because of the rising costs.
User 1 expressed their surprise by saying, “I can’t believe how often you keep facing losses after losses. It’s hard for me to comprehend.” User 2, on the other hand, requested a decrease in subscription prices, stating that the increase to $5.99 was difficult for small streamers and that mobile pricing is already too expensive.
Could you please reconsider the rise in subscription fees? It’s particularly challenging for smaller streamers, as many loyal subscribers have had to cancel due to the price hike to $5.99, and mobile pricing is already quite steep. Increasing mobile prices further seems unfair at this point.

As a devoted fan, I find myself questioning the recent price hike on Twitch, given the whispers of financial hardships surrounding the platform. Despite its massive popularity and dedicated viewership, it seems that since Amazon’s acquisition in 2014, Twitch has been grappling with turning a profit. Here’s to hoping this move will steer them in the right direction. I remain skeptical.
