Twisters Director Reveals Inspiration Behind the Final Tornado

As a long-time gamer and movie enthusiast, I have always been fascinated by the intersection of science and fiction, particularly when it comes to disaster movies. The recent revelation that Universal’s “Twisters” was inspired by Frankenstein is an intriguing twist (pun intended) in the genre.

As a big fan, I’d share that in an interview, “Twisters” director Lee Isaac Chung explained the reason behind cutting the kiss scene between Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell. He also disclosed the film inspiration for the final tornado named “The Monster.”

In the movie, the colossal EF-5 tornado, known as “The Monster,” wreaked havoc on the tranquil town of El Reno. It left the local cinema in ruins, where Frankenstein was being screened. However, this wasn’t an accident, as the filmmaker explained. The selection of Frankenstein for the theater was crucial to the independent sequel to 1996’s Twister, starring Bill Paxton, produced by Universal and famed for its monster movies.

How did Frankenstein inspire Twisters’ final tornado?

In an interview with Variety, Chung shared his perspective on the film, describing it as a monster movie homage to Universal’s rich history. He explained, “With the concept of a tornado at the core, I drew parallels between its formation and the classic tale of Frankenstein. The refinery serves as a reflection of this connection.”

Towards the end of the interview, the director shared that Edgar-Jones’ character had a profound impact on him while they were making the film.

Chung described his experience on the project as if he were trying to keep up with a volatile tornado. However, similar to a filmmaker’s journey, according to Chung, there is pleasure in facing challenges and eventually finding satisfaction in the end. Consequently, he derived immense joy from creating this film.

What is Twisters about?

Kate, Javi, and Tyler find themselves in a life-threatening predicament as they face the wrath of numerous storms and tornadoes merging over Central Oklahoma in “Twisters.”

Alongside Edgar-Jones portraying Kate and Powell playing Tyler, the movie features an ensemble cast including Anthony Ramos as Javi, Maura Tierney as Cathy, Brandon Perea as Boone, Daryl McCormack as Jeb, Sasha Lane as Lily, Kiernan Shipka as Addy, Nik Dodani as Praveen, David Corenswet as Scott, Harry Hadden-Paton as Ben, Tunde Adebimpe as Dexter, and Katy O’Brian as Dani.

Twisters is now playing in theaters.
