Twisters Director Explains Why He Dropped Out of Your Name Live-Action Remake

As a seasoned gamer with years of navigating through the labyrinthine world of film production, I can empathize with Lee Isaac Chung’s decision to step away from the live-action adaptation of Your Name. Adapting an animated masterpiece like that is akin to trying to recreate a beloved video game in real life – the challenge is daunting and the expectations are sky-high.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase that as: “I, myself, had to step away from directing the live-action version of ‘Your Name.’ Here’s why.” This way, it maintains the original structure while making it more personal and engaging for the reader.

Back in 2017, I was completely captivated by “Your Name”, a Japanese animated fantasy movie that made waves in North America. Then, in September of that same year, I learned with great excitement that J.J. Abrams had plans to create a live-action version of this beloved film! This upcoming adaptation is set to be distributed through Paramount Pictures.

In 2019, director Marc Webb was tapped to helm The Amazing Spider-Man film, but later in 2020 it was revealed that he had been replaced by Chung. But then, in July 2021, Chung exited the project and Carlos López Estrada stepped in as his replacement.

Why did Lee Isaac Chung drop out of the live-action Your Name movie?

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Chung discussed the reasons behind the project’s failure to materialize during his tenure on it.

He shared, “I found myself deeply fond of everyone in that situation,” he expressed. “What I didn’t anticipate when I embarked on adapting a Japanese animated film for America was how challenging it would be. Toho had set that goal for us, but the task proved to be quite difficult.

He stated, “Throughout the pandemic, I spent several months crafting that screenplay. Eventually, I arrived at a point where I recognized that what I’d written was something I simply couldn’t film.

Apart from the 2024 movie Twisters featuring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, Chung is recognized for his directorial work in the 2020 film Minari, starring Steven Yeun, Alan Kim, and Youn Yuh-jung. Notably, he has also directed an episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, set to debut on Disney+ on December 3, 2024.

In the meantime, Estrada is recognized for creating films such as Blindspotting (2018), Summertime (2022), and Raya and the Last Dragon (2021). At present, there’s no scheduled release date for the live-action remake of Your Name.
