Upon assuming office, President Donald Trump recently issued an Executive Order extending ByteDance’s ownership of TikTok by 75 days, allowing them time to find a buyer for the widely-used video-sharing social media platform. This week, Trump hinted to reporters that Microsoft is in negotiations to purchase TikTok, and expressed his hope that competitive bidding among potential buyers could ensue.
On late Monday, as reported by Reuters, President Trump disclosed to journalists that Microsoft was involved in talks with ByteDance about the possibility of acquiring TikTok. However, neither Microsoft nor ByteDance have chosen to confirm these negotiations.
In addition, it’s said that Trump expressed interest in having an auction among U.S. corporations for TikTok. It’s interesting to recall that around five years ago, when Trump first suggested banning TikTok during his initial term, Microsoft was among the contenders vying for the app’s U.S. operations. However, ByteDance chose to turn down Microsoft’s acquisition offer and instead formed a partnership with Oracle instead.
