According to Cosmic Book News, reports emerged about a comic book promoting LGBT themes being produced using U.S. taxpayer funds in Peru. However, former President Donald Trump has since decided to halt this funding due to its controversial nature.
It’s learned President Donald Trump’s new DEI policies have impacted the comic book community.
Under the leadership of President Biden, it appears that his Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies may have supported the production of a transgender-themed comic book in Peru, as suggested by House Foreign Affairs Chairman Brian Mast (R-Fla.).
…”Mast mentioned, ‘There was a comic book featuring a transgender character,'” he said. “We’re attempting to obtain the original comic book, which is reportedly quite provocative, from Peru.
Based on a review of federal records by The Daily Mail, it appears that a trans comic book creator from Peru was granted approximately $32,000 during the tenure of former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who served under President Biden.
American comic books infected with DEI
DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) has left its mark not just on international comic books, but also on the “big two” in the U.S., which are DC Comics and Marvel. These giants have faced criticism from fans due to what some consider a progressive or inclusive approach, a trend that has persisted for more than ten years now.
The District Comic Universe (DC) has introduced many of their characters as LGBTQ+, even Superman. Similarly, Marvel has swapped out traditional characters for more progressive or “inclusive” ones. This website was initially established in 2008 due to Marvel Comics’ adoption of more diverse and socially aware character portrayals.
Instead of Superman’s son, Kal-El or Clark Kent, it is a character from the last decade who was made gay for progressive reasons, which some find troubling. Moreover, if DC and Marvel’s current management are any guide, they seem determined to persist with this direction, refusing to let go of these changes. Unfortunately, the continuity of DC and Marvel comics has suffered greatly in recent years, making it necessary to discard much of what happened over the past 25 years as it is generally considered poor quality.
It’s important to note that DC Comics was already making diverse representations before some of Marvel’s more recent “woke” changes, such as introducing an Asian Atom, Black Firestorm, and Latino Blue Beetle around 2004 in the publication of Identity Crisis. Characters like the lesbian Question and Batwoman were also introduced during this time, with Renee Montoya, a character originally from Batman: The Animated Series, taking on the role of Batwoman. Interestingly, Montoya was not initially portrayed as a lesbian until Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka, co-writers of Gotham Central, decided to change her sexual orientation through retconning. Intriguingly, Brubaker himself later retconned a character named Holly Robinson into a lesbian in the Catwoman comics.
If I recall correctly, other writers also played a part in these forced and unnatural changes. For instance, Brubaker was involved in such steps that altered Renee Montoya’s sexual orientation. It’s worth noting that critics who find Marvel’s recent race/gender swapping over the past decade excessive might want to consider DC’s similar efforts, which were not driven by story necessity but rather political motivations. And these changes often came about in ways that negatively impacted the original white characters.
It was appropriate for Donald Trump to halt any financial support for what he calls a biased publication. Those who consider LGBT beliefs crucial should perhaps produce their own comic strip and finance it independently.
