Who is Kalpana Raghavendar?
Born into a lineage of musical talent, Kalpana Raghavendar hails from a family where music flows abundantly. Her father, T. S. Raghavendra, has worn multiple hats as a playback singer, composer, and actor in the realm of music. Her mother, Sulochana, contributes her voice to this rich tradition, while her sister, Shekinah Shawn, extends their family’s musical prowess into the operatic world.
She studied Carnatic music under the guidance of Madurai T. Srinivasan and has earned a Master’s degree in Computer Applications.
From a young age of five, I found my passion in singing and at six, I graced the silver screen in the film Punnagai Mannan. My first recorded song was a heartwarming family track, beautifully composed by Saluri Vasurao. Fast forward to 1999, I embarked on my playback singing career with the enchanting Mangalagouriki from Manoharam, skillfully created by Mani Sharma.
She collaborated with many renowned composers such as Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman, and also performed alongside artists like S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and K. S. Chithra. However, she is more recognized for her live performances than playback singing. To date, she has sung in approximately 3,000 stage shows across the globe. In 2013, she spearheaded a tribute concert to honor her mentor, Madurai T. Srinivasan.
The singer also had a small role in Punnagai Mannan, the 1986 film starring Kamal Haasan.
