Have you ever pondered if the first-person shooter game “Doom” should be displayed in a museum? By “museum,” we’re not suggesting it should be moved from its status as a work of art, but rather, could it be exhibited there as an important piece of cultural history.
This remake focuses on relocating grisly gunfights and battles against infernal creatures to an opulent setting adorned with elegant artworks and classical melodies playing softly in the background.
Sipping Wine Instead Of Slaying Demons
Following our discussion about an unusual CAPTCHA requiring you to engage in Doom for verification, here’s another captivating twist on the classic game.
This entertaining, no-cost web-based game, crafted by Filippo Meozzi and Liam Stone, creatively recreates the initial stage of the classic game, ‘Doom’. Instead of demons, it features paintings and rather than a chainsaw, it offers a cheese knife.
In this new version, the original demon-infested environments are replaced with galleries filled with artworks, and instead of using a powerful chainsaw to fight off enemies, you’ll find yourself wielding a harmless but quirky cheese knife. It’s an innovative take on a beloved game, offering a fresh experience while still maintaining the essence of ‘Doom’.
On its itch.io-page they wrote:
During this unique event, you will have the opportunity to stroll through and admire some captivating artwork as you sip wine and indulge in delicious hors d’oeuvres. This enchanting experience takes place in the elegantly restored and creatively redesigned E1M1 level from id Software’s iconic 1993 game, DOOM.
When Hell Becomes An Art Museum
In a unique twist, the duo unveiled Doom: The Artistic Journey, replacing Doomguy’s usual arsenal with a glass of wine and guiding him through an artistic gallery rather than the traditional gates of hell.
Each piece of art shown within the game can be found with more information on its specific page at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s online platform.

The artwork exhibited in the game corresponds to a dedicated webpage on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s site for further exploration.
Instead of slaying monsters, players earn funds to buy goods and “equipment” from a souvenir shop. The central area displays your alcohol intake, wealth, and a “cheese gauge” representing player health, which can be replenished by finding appetizers scattered around the setting.
What do you think about this version of Doom? Could you imagine other takes on the FPS classic?
