In the latest Toy Story movie, Woody, Jessie, and Buzz Lightyear embark on a fresh journey as they delve into how playtime is evolving amidst a landscape dominated by tablets and technology.
Jessie Becomes The New Sheriff
In the fifth installment of “Toy Story”, it’s Jessie’s turn in the limelight. With Woody’s position now vacant as the main toy in Bonnie’s room, Jessie has assumed control and taken up where Woody left off. When a mysterious new gadget starts altering Bonnie’s behavior, Jessie senses something amiss and summons Woody for one last adventure together. This storyline signifies a fresh start for the series, with Jessie assuming the leadership role. After departing from Bonnie’s toys in “Toy Story 4”, we see Woody making his return following Jessie’s call. Though no longer bound to a child, he remains devoted to his old companions.
Buzz Lightyear Subplot
The movie initiates by depicting a band of Buzz Lightyear action figures washed ashore following an unexplained vessel disaster. Despite believing themselves to be genuine space explorers, they unite and embark on a self-assigned quest. This amusing and disorderly side story injects humor and gently satirizes Buzz’s initial illusions from the first movie.
Meet The New Villain, Lily Pad
The latest adversary isn’t another plaything, instead, it’s a digital gadget. The Lily Pad, modeled after a frog, initially appears to be a useful learning tablet for Bonnie, yet subtly takes over her focus. Over time, its influence becomes a subtle menace to the toys’ existence, revealing the widening gap between children and traditional play. Pixar portrays Lily Pad as an attractive yet spiky character who firmly believes it is acting in the best interest of Bonnie.
New And Familiar Voices Return
Tom Hanks reprises his role as Woody, with Tim Allen back as Buzz Lightyear. Joan Cusack lends her voice to Jessie once more, and familiar voices such as Wallace Shawn (Rex), John Ratzenberger (Hamm), and others are set to return. New additions to the cast include Conan O’Brien, who voices a new character called Smarty Pants, and Anna Faris in an unspecified role. Ernie Hudson takes over the voice of Combat Carl from the late Carl Weathers, who passed away in 2024.
Toy Story 5 hits theaters on June 19, 2026.
