Torrey DeVitto explains why Dr. Meredith Fell isn't in The Vampire Diaries after season 4

As a huge fan of Torrey DeVitto and her acting skills, I was both surprised and saddened to hear about the reasons behind her departure from The Vampire Diaries. Having watched her portray Dr. Meredith Fell’s intriguing character development and her romantic storyline with Alaric, I was excited to see where her character would go next.

I, as a dedicated fan, am excited to share that Torrey DeVitto has recently revealed the heartfelt motivation behind her departure from “The Vampire Diaries.” Contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t due to any professional conflicts or creative differences; instead, it stemmed from a deeply personal reason that remained hidden from us viewers.

After making her debut on “Pretty Little Liars,” DeVitto gained more popularity by becoming a part of the CW sensation “The Vampire Diaries” in its third season. She portrayed Dr. Meredith Fell, a surgeon who gets entangled in the supernatural realm and forms a romantic connection with Alaric.

As an avid fan, I was thrilled to see my favorite character, Meredith, gaining more recognition in the show during season 3. The climax of the finale left me on the edge of my seat when she saved Elena’s life by turning her into a vampire with her own blood. It seemed like an exciting turn of events, and I was looking forward to seeing how Meredith’s storyline would develop further.

In an unexpected revelation on Rachel Bilson’s Broad Ideas podcast, DeVitto explained why she left “The Vampire Diaries” after being married to her co-star Paul Wesley, who played Stefan Salvatore, and experiencing the fallout from their divorce. The emotional toll of the split and her own reservations about returning to the show ultimately led DeVitto to make the decision to leave.

It was [public]. It was the first time I did something like that. Because he was on a really big show that was really popular, so it did draw [attention]. I was [on it], but I only did like six episodes. And then once we were splitting up I was like, ‘Pfft, not going back there. I’m not that kind of person that’s like, ‘Well, this is business, I can stay.’ It’s like, no. I don’t want to come back. I’m good, thank you.

Torrey DeVitto had to move on after her divorce

Devitto gave further insights into her experience, explaining that she wasn’t ready for the intense scrutiny of her divorce due to “The Vampire Diaries'” massive fanbase. Many passionate fans of Stefan, in particular, made her feel unfairly criticized.

That did garner a bit of attention in a way that I don’t think I was prepared for. And then it was hard too because for a couple years, anybody that I would date afterwards, people would just [say], ‘He’s so disgusting. He’ll never be [Wesley]. How could you do this?’ It was mortifying [because fans] glamorized [Stefan] though they didn’t actually know him.

Devitto recovered nicely, securing the part of Dr. Natalie Manning on the successful NBC series “Chicago Med.” She’s been keeping herself occupied with roles in various Hallmark Channel films and appears to be thriving in her current situation.

It’s unfortunate that the focus on personal matters led to DeVitto leaving “The Vampire Diaries,” as she excelled in her role and there was potential for Meredith to develop further. At least, DeVitto found another successful TV show to join, allowing fans to continue appreciating her talent.
