16-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena commenced his farewell tour during the WWE Royal Rumble event in 2025, entering as contestant number 23. During the match, he eliminated Finn Bálor, Braun Strowman, and Logan Paul.
As the game unfolded, it became clear that John Cena and Jey Uso were the last contestants standing. Most spectators assumed that Cena would take the win due to his storied career. But then, an unexpected turn of events occurred: when Cena attempted to execute an Attitude Adjustment near the ring ropes, Jey Uso managed to avoid it, scurried back into the ring, and shoved Cena out, claiming a remarkable victory.
Following his victory in the Royal Rumble, it looks probable that Jey Uso will face off against GUNTHER next. However, after Cena’s defeat, questions arose about his future plans. To clear up this uncertainty, he announced his intention to compete in the upcoming Elimination Chamber match.
Eager to etch his name further in wrestling history, John Cena aimed to claim the WWE Championship an unprecedented 17th time. Yet, current WWE Undisputed Champion, Cody Rhodes, shows no inclination towards squaring off against Cena during his final tour.
Cody Rhodes on why he won’t face John Cena in his retirement tour
Ever since John Cena declared his retirement tour in July 2024, quite a few WWE stars have voiced their desire to take on him one last time. Yet, the current WWE Undisputed Champion, Cody Rhodes, has shown no signs of wanting this encounter and has recently shared his reasons for it.
As a dedicated admirer, I found myself reflecting on my conversations with Theonemona. Rhodes admitted that numerous wrestlers yearned for the opportunity to share the ring with Cena before his final bow. Yet, he opted out of this encounter due to the profound respect and far-reaching impact Cena has instilled in his professional journey.
He stated:
When John announced his retirement, there was a surge of wrestlers eagerly expressing their desire to compete with him or collaborate on projects. However, I, being one of the few exceptions, did not volunteer for this opportunity. The reason is quite straightforward: John holds immense significance in my life. Over the years, many wrestlers have influenced me, and I’ve learned from them, but none has touched me as deeply as John has.
What I’ve learned the most from anyone throughout my life was from John, during those years we spent together on the road and at events. Seeing him interact with fans, seeing him perform main events… So when I hear ‘this is it,’ it still feels unreal to me. I prefer not using the phrase ‘this is it.’ [H/T: WrestlingInc]
Cody Rhodes currently has no plans to battle John Cena during Cena’s farewell tour, but if circumstances shift and Cena emerges victorious in the Men’s Elimination Chamber bout, that decision could be reconsidered. The future at WWE Elimination Chamber: Toronto remains uncertain.
