In Monster Hunter Wilds, while there may not be the largest collection of monsters compared to other games in the series, there are more than twenty different creatures to hunt. Among these new additions, Quematrice and Lala Barina have received particular praise. Although some of the novelty in these new monsters is intriguing, and it’s always exciting to encounter familiar faces, that doesn’t necessarily make battling them a delightful experience.
In contrast to previous versions, Monster Hunter Wilds is more accessible for newcomers, but this change has sparked some controversy among dedicated fans. However, it’s important to note that there are still tough boss battles in this game, and here are a few examples of the most challenging ones. These encounters will be rated based on difficulty and their narrative integration within the storyline.
8. Balahara
Guardian Of The Dunes
- First Encountered: Balahara of the Sandsea
- Area: Windward Plains
In the game “Monster Hunter Wilds,” Balahara is a serpentine sandworm residing in the Windward Plains. This isn’t your typical friendly creature; Balahara of the Sandsea is the first mission that requires you to defeat it, and at this stage of the game, it’s far from easy. It may not be an outright villain, but its slender form makes it challenging to hit accurately. Moreover, it can escape tricky situations by moving swiftly or burrowing underground, suggesting a mount like Seikret might be beneficial for taking it down.
7. Yian Kut-Ku
Three For The Price Of One

- First Encountered: Lured By Abundance
- Area: Scarlet Forest
After successfully completing Monster Hunter Wilds for the first time, players encounter Yian Kut-Ku as their initial significant hunt. This creature has been a part of the series since its inception in 2004. In this battle, players aim to capture the beast, but catching it isn’t always straightforward, which can make the mission Lured By Abundance challenging. Moreover, during the fight, three Yian Kut-Kus will be present, and their erratic behavior can lead to tricky situations due to their powerful magma breath and swift beak pecks.
6. Hirabami
Advantages Over Flight

- First Encountered: Fight or Flight
- Area: Iceshard Cliffs
In some aspects, Hirabami resembles Balahara’s challenges. Notably, Hirabami possesses a slender, serpentine body and the ability to fly, making it difficult to hit in the game Monster Hunter Wilds. Unless players are equipped with a bow or other ranged weapon when entering the mission Fight or Flight, they might find themselves adopting a waiting strategy.
Individuals accustomed to farming monsters for components through the Wound mechanism might face challenges in consistently hitting those particular spots for the desired impact, and just as in the Yian Kut-Ku battle, they’ll initially encounter multiple Hirabamis.
5. Nu Udra
A Fiery Octopus

- First Encountered: The Black Flame Quietly Manifests
- Area: Oilwell Basin
Regarding Nu Udra, you can encounter it during the opening mission The Black Flame Quietly Manifests or later in Scorching the Earth Once More – either way works fine. In Monster Hunter Wilds, Nu Udra stands out as one of the most powerful new monsters regardless of its rank. It’s essentially a colossal octopus with an impressive reach thanks to its tentacles and the ability to ignite itself on fire. The Oilwell Basin has some open areas, but Nu Udra’s nest is so compact that there’s often not enough space to dodge its attacks, leading to potential Game Over scenarios more than once.
4. Zoh Shia
The Game’s First Final Boss

- First Encountered: Guardian Zoh Shia
- Area: Ruins of Wyveria
In the lower tier of Monster Hunter Wilds, Zoh Shia serves as the final boss. This colossal dragon-like creature poses no need for pursuit by players; instead, their task is to confine it within a chamber containing the Dragontorch, its source of sustenance. The Dragontorch’s essence allows Zoh Shia to fortify itself, covering its body with an armor-like shield and augmenting its strength. Given the limited space for maneuverability against such a gargantuan adversary, facing off against Zoh Shia is nothing short of intimidating.
3. Gore Magala
Beware Its Frenzy

- First Encountered: Shrouded in Black
- Area: Iceshard Cliffs
In the latter half of the game’s second campaign, you’ll encounter Gore Magala during the mission titled “Shrouded in Black.” This monster has made a comeback in the series from Monster Hunter 4. It’s another dragon, but unlike others, it infects creatures near The Forbidden Lands with Frenzy, causing them to become enraged.
For instance, players must encounter and battle against Blangonga, a monkey infused with Frenzy that was initially introduced in Monster Hunter 2, who is not a novice foe. Additionally, Gore Magala possesses an expansive wingspan and operates within confined spaces, its breath attack imbued with Frenzy has the power to leave players stunned. However, if they manage to control it, battling Blangonga afterwards becomes much more manageable.
2. Jin Dahaad
Gained A Significant Boost

- First Encountered: The Rimechain Trial
- Area: Iceshard Cliffs
Experiencing my initial skirmish with Jin Dahaad in The Rimechain Trial was nothing short of electrifying, brimming with thrilling chase sequences across Iceshard Cliffs. Armed with the help of numerous Support Hunters such as Olivia, engaging him wasn’t overly challenging.
However, my later encounter with him on the Frozen Lord’s Precipice was a completely different story that pushed even the most patient of gamers to their limits. His immense size could bulldoze through players effortlessly, and his diverse beam attacks had the power to instantly fell them. To add to the challenge, he boasted an impressive health pool and the battle seemed endless, dragging on and on.
1. Arkveld
Finally, The True Form Reveals Itself

- First Encountered: Awakening From A Dream
- Area: Windward Plains
Initially, gamers will encounter Arkveld under the guise of Guardian Arkveld, facing off against it twice during the initial stages of the game. Although these battles prove demanding, they remain manageable. However, the true Arkveld doesn’t make an appearance until the climactic story mission, Awakening From A Dream, at which point things take a drastic turn. Much like Jin Dahaad, Arkveld boasts a substantial amount of HP and players will be led on a journey across the Windward Plains before it finally succumbs. The materials derived from Arkveld can help craft exceptional equipment in Monster Hunter Wilds, but the prospect of battling it repeatedly isn’t particularly appealing as it doesn’t grow any less challenging.
