As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share the thrilling news that I, along with many others in the wrestling community, have been buzzing about since the summer of 2024: none other than Tony Khan, President of AEW, held a meeting with the legendary Shane McMahon, a former WWE superstar. This encounter has fueled widespread speculation, as Shane McMahon took a leave from the world of professional wrestling following WrestleMania 39. The anticipation is palpable among fans, wondering if this could mark his grand return to the ring!
Nevertheless, whispers about his anticipated AEW premiere picked up steam last year, particularly following the news of his encounter with Tony Khan. Then, in July 2024, it was reported that Khan and McMahon secretly met close to Arlington Airport for discussions on potential collaborations.
An unauthorized image of McMahon and Khan surfaced on the internet, further sparking curiosity and conjecture. Additionally, McMahon has been spotted meeting with AEW personalities Mercedes Mone and The Young Bucks, which has added fuel to the fire regarding potential transition to AEW.
Regardless of the gossip circulating, no concrete outcomes emerged from their discussions. Lately, Jonathan Coachman hinted at Vince McMahon expressing interest in owning a stake and managing AEW. Yet, it’s rumored that Tony Khan cut off contact after their clandestine meeting.
On The Coach & Bro Show, Coachman expressed, “I’ve been told that Shane McMahon requested the moon. He sought ownership stake in the company and wanted control over the entire production. This is one of those rare instances where I find myself siding with Tony Khan for ignoring him, as it was Tony who ignored Shane, not the other way around. It’s almost as if Shane can’t decide what he wants to focus on, which is evident by his presence at the Super Bowl alongside his father.” [Source: WrestlingInc]
Following the clandestine gathering, it appears that Khan did not follow through with McMahon. Recent disclosures offer fresh insights into McMahon’s failed negotiations with the president of AEW and his response to being ignored.
How Shane McMahon reacted to Tony Khan ‘ghosting’ him
According to a reliable insider, Fightful Select (a subscription service) reported that Tony Khan did not pursue further discussions after a clandestine meeting with Shane McMahon. It appears McMahon desired to take charge within AEW, but there’s speculation that Khan might have perceived this suggestion as a jest due to McMahon’s lack of familiarity with AEW’s business structure.
According to Jonathan Coachman, there was no further communication between Tony Khan and Shane McMahon following their encounter. However, as reported by Fightful Select, McMahon seems to have taken the situation in stride, not holding a grudge against being overlooked.
The reports indicate that AEW and Shane McMahon do not intend to collaborate extensively at this time. While it’s unlikely he will regularly appear on AEW television, there might be an opportunity for a brief guest appearance.
