Tomb Raider TV Show From Phoebe Waller-Bridge Gets Disappointing Update

The highly anticipated Tomb Raider TV series from Amazon MGM Studios has recently been updated on its development progress, approximately a year after it received an official series order. This live-action adaptation was originally slated to be created by renowned writer and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is widely recognized for her exceptional work on the Fleabag miniseries.

What was the Tomb Raider TV show’s disappointing update?

It’s been reported that Amazon is no longer moving forward with Waller-Bridge’s live-action Tomb Raider series. The potential reason for this cancellation could be the script delays and creative challenges faced during its development. Earlier reports had indicated that Sophie Turner, a former Game of Thrones actress, was in talks to play Lara Croft as late as November 2024.

If it’s true that the project has been cancelled, then the upcoming Tomb Raider series on Prime Video would have marked another live-action adaptation of the acclaimed Crystal Dynamics video game franchise, following in the footsteps of the well-known Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina Jolie and the 2018 remake with Alicia Vikander. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, under her agreement with Amazon MGM Studios, had agreed to write and produce this project.

If I could inform my younger self about this development, I believe she would be utterly amazed, Waller-Bridge stated earlier when the series was confirmed. “Tomb Raider” has been a significant influence in my life, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be bringing it to television alongside such dedicated partners. Lara Croft holds great significance for me, as she does for many others, and I can’t wait to embark on this journey – with all the bats included.
