For several years now, Lara Croft, the beloved character from Tomb Raider, has been appearing in various video games and her own Netflix series. However, it’s been quite some time since she starred in a new main AAA adventure, with Shadow of the Tomb Raider being the last one back in 2018. Despite no official footage being released yet, it’s clear that Crystal Dynamics has been working on a new game for some time. Although we don’t know exactly when this new game will be launched, Embracer Group’s recent financial report hints that the developers of Tomb Raider 12 have taken on an external partner. This move seems to be due to Embracer postponing the release of a secret AAA game until 2026 or 2027.
Tomb Raider 12 developer signs agreement with “external partner”
In Embracer Group’s Q4 & Year-End report published on May 22nd, there is no direct reference to Tomb Raider. However, the report does disclose that Crystal Dynamics has entered into a deal with an external partner for one of its major intellectual properties (IP). Additionally, the report indicates that Crystal Dynamics has been actively growing its business relationships, both new and old, to broaden their project portfolio. This expansion includes collaborative development projects, as well as the allocation of more internal resources across the Embracer Group.
It’s plausible that the game under discussion is Tomb Raider, given it’s Crystal Dynamics’ most recognized franchise. While they also manage other notable franchises like Legacy of Kain and Thief, there are currently no known upcoming games for these series. In contrast, Tomb Raider 12 appears to be in development.
If the discussion is about the potential new Tomb Raider game, then the statement implies that Crystal Dynamics has enlisted an “outside collaborator” to assist with its creation. A recent job posting from Crystal Dynamics pointed towards “strike teams” being mobilized for TR12, implying that the game is likely in advanced stages of development.
Embracer internally delays mysterious AAA game to FY 2026/27
The Embracer Group’s report also indicates that a Triple-A title, initially slated for Fiscal Years 2025/26, has been pushed back to FY 2026/27. According to the report, the management is adopting a cautious stance, believing that the game may require additional time to perfect its finer details. The unspecified game is projected to generate financial performance comparable to “Kingdom Come: Deliverance II”.
The financial year under discussion is from April 2026 up until April 2027. It’s worth noting that while Tomb Raider isn’t explicitly mentioned, the ideal launch date for TR12 would be October 2026. This timing would celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary, as its first game was introduced on PS1 on October 25th, 1996.
There’s a chance that Tomb Raider could make an appearance at Summer Game Fest 2025. When asked about the potential showings of TR12, Project 007, and Wolf Among Us 2, NateTheHate, a well-known leaker, hinted that at least one of these three games will be featured in Geoff Keighley’s event.
As an enthusiastic follower, I’m excited to share that a reliable movie leaker known as vthescooper has hinted at an imminent announcement regarding TR12, the only video game they’ve spoken about so far. This upcoming open-world adventure is set in India and will feature Lara Croft riding freely on a motorcycle, with a thrilling competition to gather ancient relics against a secret society of raiders. While this information isn’t officially confirmed yet, vthescooper has previously shared insights that later appeared on the official Tomb Raider website, suggesting they may be onto something!
According to current information, Amazon Games is set to publish the upcoming game. It’s being developed using Unreal Engine 5, and the main character is a unified version of Lara Croft. Notably, it seems likely that Lara will be wielding her dual pistols once more, as promotional materials for this unified Lara, including recent appearances in Pinball FX, have typically shown her wearing a blue tank top and cargo shorts while brandishing these signature weapons.
It’s likely that we’ll catch a glimpse of Tomb Raider during Summer Game Fest, given the eager anticipation among fans for another top-tier adventure featuring Lara Croft.
Hey there, fellow gamers! I’ve got some exciting news straight from the gaming world. As it turns out, our man Jeff Grubb is hinting at a PlayStation event coming up in June. Now, here’s where things get interesting: it’s looking pretty likely that this event could be none other than a State of Play! So buckle up, gamer pals, we’re in for a treat! 😊
