Tired Gimmicks? Marvel Comics Killing Off Both Silver Surfer & Thor This Summer

The Comic Book Movie is pointing out that Marvel seems to be reusing a plot device where characters experience temporary deaths, which was first seen in the mid-2000s when Thor and various pagan deities were killed off during Dan Jurgens’ 1998-2004 tenure, only to be resurrected later during J. Michael Straczynski’s brief but rather dismal run.

In the coming month, Immortal Thor #23 penned by writer Al Ewing and illustrated by Jan Bazaldua signifies the commencement of Thor Odinson’s final stand. This epic tale, which has been unfolding since Ewing began his celebrated tenure on the series, reaches a new phase as Thor faces the wrath of the malevolent deities of Utgard all by himself.

The signs are too clear to ignore now. The time for the prediction cannot be postponed any longer. It’s time for the moment when the God of Thunder will fall!

In the 25th issue of Immortal Thor, hitting stores in July, you’ll find Justin Greenwood’s art debuting in Marvel Comics. Although death might not be a permanent end in the comic book world, the press release hints that we should keep an eye out for more from Warren Ellis’ ongoing storyline in the coming months.

If Thor is resurrected or not, the fact that writer Ewing is involved makes it unappealing. It’s unnecessary to present such a storyline, as it’s become more like tabloid gossip than a genuine tribute. Such adaptations are merely annoying purist fans by further degrading Stan Lee’s legacy for monetary gain, disregarding the quality that once made Lee’s work great.

Editor’s Note: It so happens that they are ending the Silver Surfer in June, conveniently timing it for the debut of his female counterpart in Fantastic Four: First Steps in July. How disappointingly predictable.
