Tips and Tricks to Get Started in Avowed

In simpler terms, “Avowed” is a semi-open-world action role-playing video game that allows players to discover different types of landscapes in The Living Lands. As you advance through the story, you’ll gradually unlock these landscapes, each with its own unique features such as hidden secrets, puzzles, resources, equipment, and adversaries. However, before diving into exploration, which is vital for solving mysteries, gathering necessary items, and enhancing your gear, it’s essential to grasp the fundamentals of character development and gameplay style first.

Below you will find some of the best tips and tricks that will help you get started in Avowed.

Selecting a Background – Starting Weapon

Beginning an adventure in Avowed initiates a character creation process where you design and tailor the protagonist to suit your preferences throughout the game. In Avowed, there are numerous avenues for crafting and modifying your character. One distinctive aspect is the inclusion of “Godlike” attributes, as well as flora like flowers and roots that bloom on your character’s face and head. Although you can opt to hide these traits for yourself to view your character according to your liking, non-player characters (NPCs) will respond as if they are present.

Choosing a background is crucial when crafting your character, as it provides a distinct starting tool for your role-play. You’ll have five diverse options to pick from.

  • Arcane Scholar – Dagger
  • Court Augur – Mace
  • Noble Scion – Sword
  • Vanguard Scout – Axe
  • War Hero – Spear

NOTE: There is no restriction on weapon usage. You can use any type of weapon in your adventure.

Choosing a character background that aligns with your preferred starting weapon could potentially provide you with an early edge.

Investing Points in Attributes

During the final step of creating your character, you’ll assign points to attributes. There are six key attributes for your character: Might, Constitution, Dexterity, Perception, Intellect, and Resolve. Each main attribute offers two distinct improvements that influence a particular gameplay style. For example, Might represents Strength, boosting overall damage and carrying capacity. If you’re into spellcasting, prioritize the Intellect stat as it raises maximum essence and elemental resistance.

To begin with, you’ll have 10 points to distribute among the primary attributes. It’s advisable to allocate them according to the playstyle you intend to adopt. As your character advances through the game, you’ll earn additional points to further improve these attributes. This will significantly aid in shaping your character and enable you to follow a specific build that can help you overcome challenges effectively.

You’re not bound to stick with just one gameplay approach; feel free to innovate and develop your own distinct style by combining weapons and abilities. If you’d like to redistribute the skill points, you’re more than welcome to do so. Here’s how: Navigate to the Attributes menu, then click on the button to reset the points allocation. Keep in mind that this action will require a modest amount of Gold and all your points will be returned to the pool. You can now reallocate them according to the character build you have in mind.

Test Abilities from All Skill Trees

At the outset of your journey, the game will walk you through using various abilities via a tutorial. These abilities can be acquired from specific Skill Trees. In the realm of Avowed, there are four primary Skill Trees, three of which correspond to distinct playstyles and character builds. The fourth, the Godlike Skill Tree, offers exclusive abilities that can only be unlocked as you advance in the main storyline. The other three skill trees are Fighter, Ranger, and Wizard. As you progress and level up, you’ll have the opportunity to allocate points within these skill trees to acquire unique abilities tailored for each tree.

To truly enhance your character for a specific gameplay style, it’s crucial to explore skills beyond their designated tree. Doing so will add an extra layer of excitement to combat, as you’ll be able to mix and match abilities from various skill sets. Here are some recommendations for skills you should unlock during your playthrough:

1. Experiment with abilities from different trees.
2. Multiclassing can make combat more engaging.
3. Don’t forget to try out skills outside of your chosen tree!

  • Constant Recovery (Fighter): After taking damage, slowly regenerates the health of the last amount of Health lost.
  • Parry (Ranger): Time a perfect Block against a melee attack to knock the enemy back and gain an immediate counter-attack.

These skills function automatically, offering significant benefits in battle situations. Additionally, these skills come with different levels or ranks. As you advance to a higher rank for a skill, its effect intensifies. For example, achieving Rank 3 for Persistent Healing means you recover 100% of the health lost in the previous instance.

Wear the Gear According to your Playstyle

In the game Avowed, you’ll find a diverse selection of equipment such as armors, weapons, trinkets, rings, and more. Each item is crucial for your character, but selecting the right armor type is important. Avowed has three types of armor: light, medium, and heavy. While wearing heavy armor provides maximum protection against attacks, it reduces your recovery and attack speeds. Therefore, if you’re playing a fighter with heavy armor, be prepared for a potential slowdown.

As your journey through different biomes continues, you may discover additional items such as trinkets and rings. These items offer a range of benefits, from boosting your stamina and attack speed to enhancing resistances and more. Certain accessories can even help offset the negative effects of heavy armor.

Upgrade Your Gear Tier

In the game Avowed, enhancing the tier of your equipment is likely one of the most significant aspects often missed by new players. This isn’t just about making your armor or weapons stronger; it’s about raising their tier to match the challenge level of the enemies you encounter. Avowed employs a unique method for determining challenging opponents: they don’t grow more difficult as you level up, but rather based on their rarity or tier. There are five distinct tiers in the game, and by gathering the necessary materials, you can elevate your gear to the next rarity.

During your journey, you have an opportunity to establish a resting spot, often referred to as a “party camp”. This can be done by engaging in dialogue with Adra Waystone. Once established, this camp will serve as a convenient fast travel location throughout the game. Additionally, it provides useful amenities such as a Workbench. Utilizing the workbench allows you to improve the quality of your equipment by applying appropriate materials, enhancing the rarity of your preferred gear pieces.

Send the Unnecessary Items Back to Camp

At the party camp, I discovered a handy Stash for tidying up my inventory. It’s super useful as it keeps me from carrying too much gear. Now, not everyone might know this, but you can actually move items directly from your inventory to the stash. To do this, open your inventory and look for the action labeled “Stash in Camp.” Give it a click, and voila! You’ll see what’s stored in the stash. Then, just transfer any items you don’t need right away back into the stash. Makes managing my gear a breeze!

Explore the Biomes for Materials and Totems

In the game Avowed, exploration plays a significant role in the overall experience. As you journey through The Living Lands, not only will you uncover hidden secrets, but you’ll also come across valuable resources that can be utilized for crafting and enhancing your gear. As you traverse the world, keep an eye out for Totems, which are collectible items that offer extra advantages when found. Each Totem is divided into multiple fragments that are scattered throughout the game world. Collecting these fragments and returning them to camp for activation will reward you with various benefits, making your adventure much smoother. To put it simply, having additional benefits from activating Totems can be very helpful in your journey through Avowed.

Currently, these are all the suggestions we have for beginning your journey in Avowed. As you advance, remember there’s plenty more to consider. Therefore, I strongly recommend you peruse the tutorials, particularly if you’re a novice player, and don’t neglect interacting with your comrades. They might unveil secrets that currently elude your sight.
