Actor Timothée Chalamet has shared insights about the weight gain he experienced while preparing for the role in the Bob Dylan biopic titled “A Complete Unknown.” Directed by James Mangold, this music drama garnered positive feedback from both critics and viewers. The performance of Chalamet in this film has even landed him a Best Actor nomination at the 97th Academy Awards.
Here’s everything that fans need to know about his transformation for the role.
Why did Timothée Chalamet gain 20 pounds?
Actor Timothée Chalamet recently had a chat with Ailsa Chang from NPR Magazine’s All Things Considered, where they spoke about his movie, A Complete Unknown. During their conversation, Chalamet shared insights into the methods he used to embody Bob Dylan on-screen, and one of those aspects was his intentional weight gain.
In the conversation, Chang discussed how Timothée Chalamet underwent a remarkable transformation into the iconic singer in the film. The actor shared that he mastered playing musical instruments such as the guitar and harmonica, modified his behaviors to resemble Dylan’s, and even put on weight as part of his preparation. This metamorphosis also involved adopting various aspects of Dylan’s appearance to convincingly portray the singer.
Timothée Chalamet mentioned to Chang that the character he played was one of America’s finest artists, suggesting there might be listeners who could discuss it more knowledgeably than him. However, he emphasized that he had thoroughly researched every aspect of the role, including physicality and behavior. Additionally, he noted something not previously discussed – he gained 20 pounds for the part because in reality, the character was heavier than him.
On December 25, 2024, the film “A Complete Unknown” premiered in U.S. cinemas. Since then, it has grossed more than $74 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo. The movie has been recognized with various award nominations, including eight Oscars. It’s up for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay, among other categories.
