Time to Fight AI – New Details About Capcom’s Sci-Fi Game “Pragmata”

Following a prolonged period of quietness, the enigmatic science fiction game from Capcom called Pragmata has resurfaced during the latest PlayStation Showcase event, igniting curiosity, enthusiasm – and plenty of humor – among the gaming public.

The highly anticipated new IP initially unveiled in 2020 is now scheduled to launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Although an exact release date has yet to be announced, the showcase trailer offers a glimpse into the game’s captivating universe.

And it looks like the wait might have been worth it.

Moon Dreams and AI Nightmares

The story of Pragmata, taking place on a lunar research station during a bleak, future era not too far ahead, unfolds around the lives of our main characters, Hugh and his artificial companion, Diana (also known as D-I-0336-7). (It’s no wonder some have joked that she shares a name with “DIO” from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure!)

The story begins with an extraordinary advertisement within the universe, produced by Delphi Corporation. This ad promotes two revolutionary products: “Lunafilament,” a cutting-edge material, and “advanced generative AI.” Both these inventions promise to blur the boundaries between dreams and reality.

A flawless example of sci-fi satire… Yet, it seems disturbingly similar to today’s news headlines, leaving me uneasy. I fervently hope that AI rebellion – a common sci-fi plot device – remains just a work of imagination and not reality anytime soon…

The narrative revolves around Hugh and Diana’s unexpected encounter and their shared endeavor to conquer the challenges at the space station, face off against hostile AI adversaries, and make it back to Earth.

For this, gamers should manage to operate both characters concurrently. Each character is endowed with distinctive skills that enhance the other, suggesting a more tactical gaming experience within the context of an action-adventure setup.

From Silence to Spotlight

Capcom has been quite secretive about the game “Pragmata” ever since its major announcement back in June 2023, leading to both worry and amusement within the gaming community. One user even joked, “Seems like Capcom is playing a game of ‘Where’s Waldo?’ with Pragmata.

“That 2022 to 2026 is crazy! Talk about a miscalculation. Lol.”

As a fan, I’ve had my fair share of disappointments due to repeated delays, but the latest trailer has truly reignited my anticipation and curiosity. The unveiling of real gameplay footage has been nothing short of exhilarating.

From a visual perspective, the trailer seems to remind viewers of games such as “Detroit: Become Human,” “Death Stranding,” and “BioShock.” It skillfully combines high-tech, futuristic aesthetics with poignant emotional themes and depictions of a desolate, dystopian world.

Capcom’s Vision for a New Flagship

As a passionate admirer of Capcom’s creations, I can tell you that they’re not treating their upcoming title, Pragmata, as just another experimental side project. Instead, they’re aiming high, wanting it to become one of their mainstay franchises. The early responses from the fanbase seem positive, with many applauding Capcom for venturing into new territories rather than relying solely on established series like Resident Evil or Monster Hunter.

It remains to be seen if Pragmata can meet expectations – we’ll keep a close eye on its progress. With Diana being added to the roster of unsettlingly powerful child characters in games and films, there’s an inkling she conceals more than just sophisticated AI programming. Whether she’s humanity’s final savior or something much more enigmatic, one thing is certain: the moon isn’t the only entity harboring secrets.
