As a millennial who grew up in the early 2000s, I have to say that Netflix’s new horror movie “Time Cut” is a nostalgic blast from the past! The throwback songs scattered throughout the movie are like a soundtrack to my childhood memories. From hearing Fat Joe and Ashanti’s “What’s Luv?” on the radio every day, to singing along to Hilary Duff’s iconic hit “So Yesterday,” I couldn’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I watched the movie.
Just like Hilary Duff suggested, let’s rewind, rewind to the start. In Netflix’s chilling new horror flick Time Cut, that’s precisely what the protagonist Lucy does. The talented Madison Bailey from Outer Banks takes on the role of Lucy, a teenager who journeys back in time from 2024 to 2003. Her mission is to safeguard her sister from becoming the next victim of the Sweetly Slasher, a notorious serial killer.
As a film set in the past (who wouldn’t cringe at the idea of a movie set in 2003 being categorized as a period piece?), Time Cut boasts several retro tunes from the early 2000s, including a memorable and significant hit by the well-known pop star Hilary Duff. If you believe that these early 2000s songs are outdated, think twice!
Regardless if you’re a young adult like Lucy or someone from the millennial generation seeking a bit of nostalgia, this movie promises to keep you engaged with its unexpected plot twists, chills, and thrills. However, what truly captivates will be the soundtrack. Curious about some of the tunes used? Can’t recall the name of that one track? Here is a list of every song featured in the film!

At the start of the film, Summer (Antonia Gentry) goes to a party where the songs “What’s Luv?” by Fat Joe and Ashanti and “Pork and Beef” by The Coup are playing for the people dancing. If you weren’t a kid or teen in the ’90s, it’s likely that you wouldn’t have heard “What’s Luv?” more than several times a day on the radio in 2002.
In addition to those nostalgic elements, Vanessa Carlton’s popular song “A Thousand Miles” is played during a crucial moment as Lucy explores Summer’s room. Later, when she mysteriously travels back to 2003, she encounters her school where students are skating with Heelys, listening to CD players and MP3 players, and chatting on flip phones, all while Hilary Duff’s “So Yesterday” is playing. Indeed, that was the vibe of those times!
Here’s the full list of songs heard throughout the movie:
- “What’s Luv?” by Fat Joe feat. Ashanti
- “Pork and Beef” by The Coup
- “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” by Olivia Rodrigo
- “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton
- “Ain’t Got You” by Kevin Qian
- “So Yesterday” by Hilary Duff
- “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus
- “Coming Home” by Emma Jayne
- “Get Poppin” by PMG
- “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne
- “All You Wanted” by Michelle Branch
Time Cut features at least three popular songs that millennials will find themselves humming to, such as “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus (a hit on TikTok last year), “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne, and the closing track “All You Wanted” by Michelle Branch. For those two rock anthems from the early 2000s, there couldn’t be a more fitting representation of that music era.
However, the 2003-set film isn’t just about nostalgia. In the 2024 scene featuring Lucy, the current queen of the 2020s pop-rock era, Olivia Rodrigo, adds a 2000s-inspired flair. Her Grammy-nominated song “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” perfectly sets the tone for Lucy’s character and is a fitting choice for a movie that spans both the 2000s and 2020s.
