Time Cut parents guide: How violent is the teen horror movie?

As a seasoned horror enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of slasher movies since I was old enough to sneak into the local cinema, I must say that Netflix’s latest offering, Time Cut, is a delightful addition to my Halloween movie marathons. The perfect blend of early aughts nostalgia and chilling jump scares makes it an instant classic for any spooky movie night, especially when paired with the beloved Netflix originals like Fear Street trilogy and Don’t Move.

Just in time for your Halloween movie marathons, Netflix has unveiled their latest teen horror offering, “Time Cut“, on October 30th. This new release complements a chilling lineup that includes the highly-acclaimed Netflix original “Fear Street” trilogy and “Don’t Move, “, another spine-tingling horror hit fresh from Netflix’s top shelf, currently topping the list of most popular movies.

In a new twist on the teen slasher genre, Netflix-verified actors Madison Bailey (Kiara from Outer Banks) and Antonia Gentry (Ginny in Ginny & Georgia) star as siblings Lucy and Summer. Here’s the catch – due to a tragic turn of events, Lucy was born 20 years after her sister Summer was slain by the Sweetly Slasher. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Lucy manages to travel back in time to the year 2003 with the aim of shielding her sister from meeting her untimely demise.

Explore a fresh film brimming with nostalgic nods from the early 2000s and spine-tingling jump scares that are sure to make it a must-see for Halloween and Friday the 13th movie nights. However, before you settle in, here’s what you should know about Time Cut to ensure it’s suitable for your viewing preferences. No significant spoilers ahead!

Time Cut is only rated TV-14

The official Netflix webpage for the film “Time Cut” discloses that it carries an age recommendation of TV-14 due to elements like fear, strong language, and violence. This rating might come as a surprise given that most slasher horror movies usually earn either TV-MA or R ratings. However, since it’s categorized as a teen movie, Netflix opted to make “Time Cut” more accessible for younger viewers, rather than labeling it as too mature.

If you’re worried that the film may contain explicit sexual content or nudity, as it’s not mentioned in the film’s age rating, don’t fret – there will be no graphic sex scenes or unnecessary nudity. While there is romance, it’s tastefully done. Given that the story revolves around teenagers (even though the actors might not be actual teenagers), it’s appropriate for its intended audience.

In the movie, the dialogue is slightly exaggerated and includes some strong language at times, but it stops short of being excessively crude or unsuitable for viewers under 17, as seen in TV-MA or R-rated films. If Time Cut were to be shown in cinemas, it would likely earn a PG-13 rating. The majority of its age restriction is due to the chilling storyline of a serial killer causing terror and death in Sweetly.

Violence, gore, and who should watch

In several instances throughout the film, different characters meet their end at the hands of a masked killer wielding a knife, reminiscent of the Ghostface character in the “Scream” series. There’s some graphic violence and gore, but given that the show is rated TV-14, it doesn’t cross the line into excessive brutality. The scenes where characters flee from or encounter the mysterious Sweetly Slasher are undeniably terrifying.

From a thrilled viewer’s perspective, “Time Cut” seems perfectly suited for a chilling yet enjoyable Halloween night watch, dimming the lights to amplify the mild terror and fun. This movie offers more than just horror and slasher elements; it delves into captivating realms of science fiction, particularly time travel. Moreover, it tackles deeply human themes such as sisterhood, family, identity, sexuality, friendship, and other teenage concerns in a relatable way, enriching the viewing experience.

Netflix advises that the movie “Time Cut” may not be appropriate for children under 14 years old, but parents might consider it if they think their mature tweens could handle it. It’s not as light-hearted as films like “Halloweentown” or “Hocus Pocus,” but it’s also not as gruesome, violent, and frightening as movies such as “Scream” or “Halloween.
