Tim Burton Is ‘Sure’ He’ll Work With Johnny Depp Again in the Future

As a diehard fan of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia when I heard that these two cinematic powerhouses might collaborate again. Their partnership has given us some of the most imaginative and eccentric films in recent memory, from the whimsical Edward Scissorhands to the darkly humorous Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Tim Burton says he’s “sure” he’ll work with Johnny Depp again at some point in the future.

More recently, Burton has directed the sequel to the 1988 movie Beetlejuice, called “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” This was unveiled in the United States just last September. Currently, he’s busy working on a modern adaptation of Nathan H. Juran’s 1958 science-fiction horror film, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.

As a longtime collaborator who’s worked alongside Johnny Depp in several productions, including the 2012 film Dark Shadows, I was recently asked during the Marrakech International Film Festival if we might team up again on a new project.

“Well, I’m sure there will be,” Burton said, via IndieWire.

He added, “I don’t typically think, ‘I’ll use these specific actors.’ Instead, it depends on the project I’m involved with. In filmmaking, it’s about teamwork and exchanging thoughts with those around me.

After his prolonged and widely-discussed legal dispute with Amber Heard, Johnny Depp has been gradually resurrecting his career. In 2023, he appeared as King Louis XV in the film Jeanne Du Barry, followed by directing a movie called Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness, which debuted at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in September 2024.

What movies have Tim Burton and Johnny Depp made together?

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton initially collaborated on the 1990 movie Edward Scissorhands, where Depp portrayed the main character. Following this, Depp took on starring roles in Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010), and Dark Shadows, all of which were directed by Burton.

Moreover, Johnny Depp lent his voice to the main character, Victor Van Dort, in the 2005 stop-motion film Corpse Bride, a production that Tim Burton shared directing duties for.
