TikTok To Shut Down in US on January 19, Unless Ban Is Halted

In the coming days, there’s a possibility that the well-liked video sharing app TikTok may be prohibited in the United States. This potential ban hinges on the verdict that will be handed down by the Supreme Court following a hearing on Friday. Here’s what we know so far about the possible ban and when TikTok might cease operations if an agreement isn’t reached.

When will TikTok shut down in the US?

It’s expected that TikTok will cease operations in the U.S. on January 19, 2025, according to a law which has been signed by the current president, Joe Biden.

1) The popular app, used by more than 170 million Americans, was set on a course for potential countrywide prohibition following Biden’s signing of a bill. In April 2024, the Senate proposed a law to the US President, requiring TikTok to be bought by American ownership by January 19 or face the possibility of being banned.

Furthermore, the law allows for a 90-day extension of TikTok’s operations if the process of transferring ownership from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, is underway by January.

The Senate is advocating for a ban on TikTok because they believe its connections with ByteDance may pose a threat to national security. According to the Justice Department, the app gathers extensive data from millions of Americans, potentially allowing China to exploit this information for spying or blackmail purposes.

As a devoted fan, I’d put it this way: “If TikTok’s current owner successfully spins off the platform, freeing it from Chinese control, it can continue its operations in the US, showcasing the same content from the same users in the same way it does now.

On January 10th, the Supreme Court will listen to the points from both sides regarding the app’s future in the United States, making a final decision.
