The “TikTok Update 2” has been attracting attention on the internet, with rumors that a revised version is being developed before the anticipated U.S. sale. President Donald Trump has mentioned that he plans to discuss a potential TikTok agreement with China.
This year, the fate of the social media app within the country was unclear following Congress’s vote for ByteDance to either sell the app or risk being banned. After Joe Biden took office as POTUS, he signed the bill, setting a legal deadline for shutdown or sale on January 19, 2025. However, this deadline was extended three times after Trump came into power.
As a passionate TikTok user, I’ve been wondering: Could it be that TikTok is planning to launch a U.S. edition of the app, codenamed M2, in anticipation of potential restrictions? Let me share what I’ve managed to gather so far.
TikTok is allegedly building new app amid U.S. ban
It’s been reported that TikTok is planning to launch an updated version of its app, informally known as M2. This news was first broken by The Information, who relied on unnamed sources for their report. This development comes following Donald Trump’s recent statement to Air Force One reporters about potential negotiations between the U.S. and China over a possible TikTok agreement. In this interview, Trump suggested that an arrangement was “almost” finalized, but emphasized that China would likely need to give its approval for the deal.
Despite having some reservations, Trump expressed optimism about the agreement. He emphasized his positive rapport with Chinese President Xi Jinping and believed the deal would bring mutual advantages for both nations (as reported by Fox Business).
In a recent interview with Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures hosted by Maria Bartiromo, Trump mentioned that a group of affluent individuals had shown interest in acquiring TikTok. He hinted at disclosing the identities of these potential buyers within the next few weeks. Furthermore, Trump postponed ByteDance’s deadline for selling off TikTok for the third time, extending it to September 17th.
It hasn’t been officially confirmed yet if TikTok will launch a U.S. edition of its video-sharing app, but as of now, it’s set to continue operation until March 2026.
