Tiger Woods to Miss Master Championship After Achilles Surgery

Tiger Woods disclosed that he underwent an operation on a torn left Achilles tendon, causing speculation about his future appearances in professional golf tournaments. The 15-time major title holder, who sustained the injury during home training sessions, underwent a minimally intrusive surgery by Dr. Charlton Stucken. Woods hasn’t given an estimated recovery timeline yet, and it seems doubtful that he will participate in the upcoming Masters tournament.

Here’s what we know about the injury, the surgery, and its impact on Woods’ career moving forward.

What happened to Tiger Woods, and how did he get injured?

On Tuesday, Tiger Woods announced that he underwent surgery for a ruptured left Achilles tendon.

The operation was carried out by Dr. Charlton Stucken at the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida. Woods himself mentioned, “As I stepped up my personal training and practice at home, I experienced a severe pain in my left Achilles, which turned out to be a rupture.” He affirmed that the surgery was minimally invasive and the operation went well, as reported by Dr. Stucken.

It’s uncertain when Woods will be back due to his Achilles injury recovery process, which usually spans weeks before one can start bearing weight again. Given this timeline, it seems highly improbable that he will participate in the Masters, slated for April 10-13. At 49 years old, his last individual tournament was the British Open in July 2024, where he failed to qualify. However, he did play in the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie, in December and has been involved in the TGL indoor golf league he co-founded with Rory McIlroy.

Throughout his professional journey, Woods has encountered numerous injuries. In 2008, he ruptured his right Achilles tendon. Since then, he’s had several operations on both his knees and back. Moreover, he still grapples with complications from the severe leg injuries sustained in a car accident in 2021. His latest absence was at the Genesis Invitational in February 2024 due to an illness. Initially, he had committed to the tournament, but eventually withdrew, stating that he wasn’t prepared yet following the passing of his mother, Kultida, earlier this year.

2023 saw Woods establish a Masters record by making the cut for an impressive 24 rounds in a row, yet he placed 60th. Unfortunately, he missed the cut for all the other major tournaments that year. His recent injury casts doubt over his participation in the 2025 season.
