Thunderbolts* Writer Drops Bombshell: Taskmaster & Ghost’s Shocking Deleted Storyline

Eric Pearson recently discussed the alterations made to Thunderbolts in a recent interview, shedding light on changes made to the original script’s background details. Notably, a storyline involving Taskmaster was eliminated. Despite being content with the movie’s overall outcome, he expressed surprise when he saw the final cut.

Eric Pearson on Taskmaster’s alternate fate in original Thunderbolts* script

As a gamer speaking about behind-the-scenes insights, I’d say: “In an earlier version of the storyline, my favorite characters, Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster and Ava Starr/Ghost, were set to have a subplot together. However, this was eventually cut during production.

In the drafts, Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster embodied the film character, and she had a side storyline with Ava/Ghost,” Pearson explained. “Both of them were brought up in labs, and Ava took the role of mentor, showing her how to escape and discover her individuality.

In the final edit of the movie, instead of the original arc, Ghost ended up killing Taskmaster with a headshot – something that took Pearson by surprise upon initial viewing. “What really caught me off guard was seeing Taskmaster take that shot,” he commented.

Pearson clarified that the initial concept aimed to delve into the common suffering experienced by Taskmaster and Ghost, a result of government experiments. He highlighted that the storyline initially focused on their path towards independence. During this time, Pearson was working on the script while moving away from Black Widow, further expanding upon the backgrounds previously set up in that film.

After Pearson departed to collaborate on The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Jake Schreier, Joanna Calo, and Lee Sung Jin assumed control over the project. During this time, the film’s overall feel and arrangement underwent a transformation. Pearson wasn’t present during filming and didn’t become aware of these final changes until he watched the finished edit.

In the movie, the creators chose to eliminate Taskmaster character to amplify the risk factor. As explained by Pearson, Schreier shared that this move aimed to astonish viewers and emphasize “there’s peril everywhere; no one is invulnerable.” Pearson further noted, “Everything else followed the course I anticipated.” The cut storyline continues to be a substantial modification from his initial screenplay.
