Initial feedback for Marvel’s Thunderbolts is out, and as put by our critic Lisa Laman, it’s a delightful gathering spot that underscores why Florence Pugh transforms each Marvel Cinematic Universe production she involves in into cinematic treasure.
Apart from the Pugh Effect, it’s clear that Marvel has been excelling lately in crafting compelling, multi-dimensional characters who captivate audiences enough to watch them in multiple movies and potentially on a shared TV series. The latest film from Marvel seems poised to match or even surpass the overall ratings of previous films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as suggested by its current Rotten Tomatoes score.
On April 29th, as the review restrictions were lifted for critics, the movie “Thunderbolts” earned an overall score of 88%. This isn’t the highest score among MCU films so far; that title is held by “Black Panther” from 2018 with a rating of 96%. However, it currently surpasses both “Avengers: Infinity War” (85%) and “Captain America: The First Avenger” (80%). With more time for the score to adjust, this is still an impressive standing, considering there will soon be 36 MCU films in total.
In the first half of the year, we’ll be seeing the second Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which seems like a considerable amount given that Marvel has reduced the number of movies and shows it releases annually. However, due to delays from the pandemic and the writer’s strike, there will be many big-name franchise films coming out this year – if you thought of Mission Impossible, you’re not the only one.
With fans no longer able to constantly complain about feeling “MCU-fatigued”, films like “Thunderbolts*” are now receiving more balanced reviews – both criticism and praise. It may share some of the flaws that the MCU is known for, but its enjoyable aspects could outshine those minor issues, making it a thrilling superhero adventure. We shouldn’t expect perfection from big-budget, franchise films – where’s the excitement in that? However, we can honestly acknowledge when the weaknesses are too significant to save the movie… and when they simply add to the enjoyable chaos of the film experience.
Thunderbolts* hits theaters this Thursday.
