Thunderbolts* Director on if They’re the Same as Suicide Squad

Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts, recently discussed what sets Marvel’s anti-hero team apart from DC’s Suicide Squad. This highly anticipated MCU film, featuring Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Sebastian Stan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Olga Kurylenko, hit theaters across the U.S. on May 2, 2025. To date, it has garnered predominantly positive feedback from both critics and fans.

Jake Schreier confirms how Thunderbolts* are different from Suicide Squad

In a conversation with Fortress of Solitude, Director Jake Schreier discussed the upcoming film, Thunderbolts*. Given that it showcases some of Marvel’s well-known morally ambiguous characters, Schreier was probed about what sets Thunderbolts* apart from DC’s Suicide Squad, another ensemble featuring anti-heroes/supervillains assembled by a government authority.

The director praised the creative team’s work on the movie, specifically Eric Pearson and executive producer Brian Chapek, for their clever storytelling. He pointed out that unlike typical expectations, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine initially assigned the characters to kill each other rather than forming a rogue team for black ops missions. This unique twist, he felt, set the film apart from the start.

Schreier stressed their choice to delve deeper into the inner turmoils of the characters, expressing that they believed they could leave a unique imprint by exploring a more introspective character journey, focusing on internal conflicts over external ones, and discovering distinct aspects in the process.

The director mentioned that the Thunderbolts team seemed to have a sense of self-importance, believing they were heroes or main characters, similar to John Walker. Contrasting this, the Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy teams, as described by Schreier, are an exceptional collection of outcasts.
