Jake Schreier, director of the upcoming superhero film “Thunderbolts“, revealed in a recent interview that images of Hiroshima served as the inspiration for the powers of the antagonist, The Void, in the movie. As a formidable adversary in “Thunderbolts”, The Void seems incredibly dynamic. Schreier elaborated on how they used both visual and practical effects to portray the fearsome abilities of this character effectively.
Jake Schreier reveals the inspiration behind The Void’s lethal powers in Thunderbolts*
During a recent interview, the director of Paper Towns discussed the intricate visual effects featured in the Thunderbolts trailer scenes involving the Void. He expressed his excitement about delving into the details before being asked to elaborate extensively on the creation process.
Jake Schreier shared with Collider that the process took quite some time, and it began by looking at references provided by Grace Yun (production designer). The inspiration clearly stemmed from visuals of Hiroshima and similar shadowy scenes.
In the preview for Thunderbolts, it appears that the Void wipes out numerous individuals in New York City. Although various theories and speculations abound on the internet about what might have occurred to these people, the footage remains persuasive in demonstrating the Void’s abilities.
During the interview mentioned earlier, Schreier emphasized that they aimed to ensure the movie’s elements didn’t appear completely computer-generated (CG). He clarified that he wanted to acknowledge the hard work of the CG team, as it was a joint effort between The Thunderbolts crew and the visual effects company, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). Schreier stated that the key to creating stunning effects is by blending the efforts of both teams together. He believes that the effect in question was developed with ILM.
It’s worth mentioning that Jake Schreier and Grace Yun have collaborated before, on the Netflix series Beef. Additionally, ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) has contributed to a variety of recent projects, such as Severance Season 2, Sinners, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Silo Season 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
*Thunderbolts is the name of a Marvel Comics team that is expected to be featured in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, but ILM’s involvement with this specific project has not been confirmed yet.
Meanwhile, Thunderbolts* arrives in US theaters on May 2, 2025.
