Eric Pearson shared insights about the significant plot turn in Thunderbolts that was directly from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. As a longtime writer for the MCU, Eric Pearson explained how Feige suggested changing the Thunderbolts into the “New Avengers” as a surprising development towards the end of production. He also discussed key modifications in the script such as Taskmaster’s demise, the omission of John Walker’s villainous arc, and how Sentry shaped the film’s emotional heart.
Eric Pearson reveals how Thunderbolts*’ New Avengers twist happened
According to a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, it was Kevin Feige who came up with the idea for the name change of “The New Avengers” into the “Thunderbolts.” (Eric Pearson’s role is implied as the one revealing this information.)
At first, Pearson proposed that Valentina would unveil the Thunderbolts to the public. However, Feige suggested, “I believe she should refer to them as the Avengers instead.” Pearson then clarified, “That was Kevin’s brainchild… and it seems to be part of a complex strategy that I’m not entirely privy to yet.
In the movie, an asterisk served as a precursor to a major overhaul in branding, which was unveiled during the last press conference scene. The team’s name, “Thunderbolts,” had its origins in a soccer team context. Yelena Belova gathered a group of underdog characters, including Ghost and Red Guardian, to form this team, and they banded together to oppose Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
According to Pearson, a subplot involving Taskmaster and Ava/Ghost was eliminated from the final version of the film. He explained that both characters had been brought up in laboratories, with Ava showing Ghost how to break free and become independent. In the end, Ghost ended up killing Taskmaster with a headshot, which took Pearson by surprise as this was a significant alteration from the original script.
Initially, Valentina intended to bring out the most villainous aspects of John Walker to make him the team’s adversary. However, as Pearson put it, “He transforms into a monster, and they must attempt to calm him down. Unfortunately, this strategy didn’t fully succeed.
As a devoted admirer, I found the introduction of Sentry in the movie to be a poignant addition, as it served to underscore the film’s profound exploration of mental health. In his own words, Pearson described Sentry as the embodiment of pure goodness and the Void as the epitome of evil, symbolizing heroic ambition against depression, self-esteem contrasted with self-loathing.
At present, Pearson is involved in The Fantastic Four: First Steps project, and he’s already had a look at one version of the movie. When asked to provide his thoughts on it, he simply said “Galactus.” Furthermore, he hinted at future endeavors such as Fast and Loose for Netflix streaming service, and there might be plans underway for a franchise revamp too.
