Thunderbolts* Box Office Is China’s Worst MCU Launch in 14 Years

Thunderbolts* is off to a bad start at the box office in China.

This weekend, “Thunderbolts” – a new Marvel Cinematic Universe film – will debut in U.S. theaters. The movie features Florence Pugh portraying Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan playing Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Olga Kurylenko in the role of Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus taking on Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

How much money has Thunderbolts* made in China?

In China, the Marvel film made its debut on April 30, 2025, but it has only earned approximately 2.5 million US dollars so far.

According to box office analyst Jatinder Singh, this represents the “smallest opening in China for any Marvel Cinematic Universe film in 14 years.

It’s not entirely certain if the low attendance at Chinese cinemas is due to political sentiments or a lack of interest in American films, as opposed to other possible reasons. On the other hand, Thunderbolts* is projected to earn approximately $70 million during its debut weekend in the U.S., according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Globally, it’s anticipated to debut with earnings between $160 and $175 million, which is a decent amount for a Marvel Cinematic Universe production and surpasses some of the more recent superhero films that have been released. Good word of mouth could also boost those figures further.

Marvel Studios gathers an unusual team consisting of antiheroes – Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker. Caught in a deadly trap by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disenchanted outcasts are thrust into a perilous mission that will compel them to delve into the deepest recesses of their past. Will this troubled team tear each other apart, or can they find redemption and become something greater before it’s too late?

Under the direction of Jake Schreier, this film is brought to you with the production helm of Kevin Feige, and it’s also overseen by executive producers Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, and Jason Tamez. The screenplay for this movie was written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, who based their work on a story originally conceived by Pearson himself.
