Thunderbolts*: Before Sentry, John Walker Was the Villain of Marvel Movie

Eric Pearson recently disclosed that Wyatt Russell’s character John Walker was initially considered as the antagonist for the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie, prior to Lewis Pullman’s Sentry. John Walker, who portrayed the US Agent, made his first appearance in the MCU during The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, playing a significant role within the team in the recent Marvel production. The release of Thunderbolts, slated for May 2, 2025, was highly anticipated and proved to be a blockbuster success at the box office.

Eric Pearson says Sentry wasn’t the original villain of Thunderbolts*

In a recent chat, the seasoned scriptwriter revealed an intriguing tidbit concerning John Walker’s persona. Eric Pearson casually mentioned that the role of the primary adversary in Thunderbolts was initially intended for US Agent rather than Sentry.

The writer who collaborated on Thor: Ragnarok shared with Screen Rant that initial drafts featured John Walker as the main antagonist in the finale. The plan was that part of Val’s deception involved her telling him his serum was losing effectiveness, and she was administering medication to keep him functioning. In truth, he was a ticking time bomb – much like the Hulk. There was going to be a poignant scene as the sun set, as the fight in the third act was intended to end with a heartfelt embrace from the beginning of this story.

Pearson mentioned that initially, the concept of making Walker a villain was entertaining but ultimately didn’t fit tonally. Instead, he opted for Sentry as he desired a character who couldn’t be defeated physically by the Thunderbolts and one with whom they would form an emotional bond.

Eric Pearson expressed, “He encompasses the entire voyage of our protagonists in a single being. Thus, I included him, and he slipped seamlessly into place. Once that was done, our focus shifted to exploring and delineating the Void realms and related aspects.
