Thug Life was originally titled Amar Hai? Kamal Haasan reveals how he and Mani Ratnam developed the idea

2025’s highly-anticipated film, “Thug Life,” is all set to hit theaters on June 5th. The creators are pulling out all the stops in generating buzz for this movie. Lately, Kamal Haasan had an exclusive chat with The Hollywood Reporter and dished a few details about the production.

In simpler terms, the actor shared details about his partnership with director Mani Ratnam, discussing their joint work on the narrative of Thug Life. Originally, he penned a screenplay called “Amar Hai,” which revolves around a man believed deceased, whose name, Amar, serves as a symbol. Later, Mani Ratnam built upon this concept and incorporated his own creative elements into the script.

Kamal Haasan mentioned that while they explored various film types, the potential for box-office success was not overlooked.

In his own terms, he completed a screenplay titled ‘Amar Hai’, which plays on words. The script revolves around a character who is thought to be deceased but actually isn’t. The character’s name is ‘Amar’, and that’s the crux of the story. After I sketched out the idea, Mani expanded upon it.

Apart from expressing his opinions about the essence of violent scenes in films, the seasoned actor compared Jackie Chan’s movies to portrayals of violence found in Thug Life and Nayakan. He commented that while Jackie Chan’s works often make violence seem enjoyable and amusing, these other movies present it in a more serious and impactful manner.

As a passionate admirer, I wholeheartedly agree with him when he says that these movies underscore the futility of violence. He emphasized that these depictions are not intended as entertainment but serve a profound purpose – they demand accountability from us.

Kamal Haasan expressed that while watching Jackie Chan movies, one may find violence entertaining. However, when viewing films like Thug Life or Nayakan, one realizes the senselessness of violence. It’s not about enjoyment, but a duty to address one’s strength. How do you handle your power?
